VentureBeat: Apple releases iPhone 2.2 update, it’s a big one

Thanks for the tweet, downloading now.

We shouldn’t be expecting Flash for the iPhone, which is just fine with me. I seriously doubt you’re ever going to see someone else’s runtime environment running on the iPhone—Flash, AIR, Java, etc. The way to make apps on the iPhone is to use Apple’s SDK and not anyone else’s. That’s not going to change.

Version 2.2 continues the iPhone juggernaut as the premier handheld data device that happens to make phone calls.

Except for direct podcast download, there's nothing in it for me!

They gotta revamp the SMS app with forwarding and MMS support, maybe with optional MobileMe sync of messages.

Flash support might not come at all given you could then build amazing webapps and apple can't make a buck with app store ;)

As Albert stated, I don't think we'll ever see Flash support for the iPhone. Even though Adobe's willing to co-operate in the development, it's Apple that needs to consent. I guess it's a pure strategic move, and there's nothing wrong with it. If I were Apple, I think I'd do the same. However draconian Apple's model is now, it does enable them to control the device top to bottom. That's what makes the iPhone so good.
It's just the nature of the beast, I guess.

There is still, also, no Java support, and no SyncML support. Strange as just about every serious phone in the industry supports Java (at least J2ME Midlets)... and SyncML is the worldwide standard for synchronization.

My interpretation is that Apple STILL doesn't understand the business / enterprise world.

WTF Apple/Adobe!!!! take your time why don't you

The frustration with autocorrect was not only the inability to DISABLE it entirely (hooray, at last), but the fact that the opt-in/opt-out logic was BACKWARDS:
continuing to type = 'accept' it
hitting the 'x' (that you hadn't noticed) = 'reject'

Any UI designer would know, as on most other phones, that the logic should be the other way:
    continuing to type = 'reject'
    hitting the 'checkmark' = 'accept'

or at least let users choose which style (opt-in vs opt-out) they prefer...

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I still wish it was possible to cancel a text message after you click send but before it is actually sent. You can do that on the blackberry.

Now, hopefully they can shift their focus to things customers really want, like MMS. I make the case here: http://blog.mcmanus-family.com/2008/09/the-case...

So many websites use Flash for their video players, audio players, interface, etc. Until the iPhone and Safari support Flash for web browsing it will be a half a$$ browser.

So far I haven't dropped a call - hope that means it's fixed. I still was hoping MMS would pop up sometime soon.

MMS support has been a sore topic for me personally. It's a strange thing. Our company QWASI already has an approved app in the store (QWASI Pad), but that doesn't matter... cause we posted a true MMS applications, but it was, as you can guess, denied. You will find that the “powers that be” (PTB) at Apple are not keen to accepting a true MMS application - we tried with our ActivMMS app submitted months ago to no avail. We hope Apple will change their "tune" and offer it in the store… but it doesn’t look good getting handed the rejection card by their review team. And what makes us different from many other groups submitting apps, QWASI has been delivering carrier-grade SMS & MMS for over 5 years since we are a true mobile messaging company. I just don't get it - everyone wants this along with C&P and even flash for their browser.

Here's the link... hope it gers approved for the store soon: ActivMMS

We hope they reconsider and will keep everyone posted… fingers crossed.

I've been using the update over the weekend, and I'm certainly impressed. The iPhone is getting progressively better, but I wonder about Apple's priorities. For instance, street view is a nice feature (and they implemented it beautifully), but I think there are other, more pressing priorities they could have worked on instead.

For one, the maps feature is *so close* to being great for in-car navigation. All it would need is improved recognition of where you are on your route. Throw in turn-by-turn directions and route-recalculation and you've got a full-blown GPS device right there. I see no limitations with the hardware that would prevent this, only that it must not be a very high priority for Apple.

So how does Apple decide priorities? GPS devices have been fantastic holiday sellers. If Apple implemented these features in the iPhone, couldn't they make the marketing case to consider the iPhone as a gift instead of a GPS device? Seems like that might further help holiday sales.
