I'm very skeptical, because they all eventually come to the same thing. They're not really dating scenes, they really don't exhibit authentic character, they're not sincere business models. Oddly, I would compare these apps to what people said of bars and dives in the pre-Stonewall era. They are schemes, they exploit. Their "social network" doesn't lead to any good end, other than people looking for sex on the "down low" and the like. I'm skeptical, because he says he's inspired by Myspace. Really? I'm suppose to be confided by such a statement? Come again? Even if he said Facebook, I would be skeptical. This stuff is the worst of social networking in most regards. It's the also the worst of he gay community. It's the worst way to get a date, because the plethora of people are swaying this app phenomena in a totally different orientation. Show me a business plan that really reveals how he's going to deal with problem and change the culture? By that, I don't mean the culture of the gay community itself, but those that use these apps. It's hard enough to think outside the box in using things like Facebook, that I am far less to believe it in terms of a "dating app." Just look up the word "gay" at the Apple app store, aside from a more specific search. More than likely, you will get hits that fit what I am describing. There are hardly any even OTHER kinds of apps. But, if the entrepreneur actually hears and comprehends what I'm saying, then good luck and I wish him well. Otherwise, I think he's wasting time, reinventing the broken wheel.

Re: BigJock, a Silicon Valley gay social networking start-up

Thanks for this article Matt. I've been waiting for sites such as VentureBeat to start discussing the innovation that's happening in the gay community.
kamagra m65 acne attorney 14k lawyer

Re: BigJock, a Silicon Valley gay social networking start-up

Great blog post, Matt. I, for one, have signed up for BigJock, and am very excited about its debut and future success. It seems to offer really cool features, a combination of myspace and dlist. Big hairy muscle hugs of thanks.

Re: BigJock, a Silicon Valley gay social networking start-up

Thanks for this article Matt. I've been waiting for sites such as VentureBeat to start discussing the innovation that's happening in the gay community. My gripe is that a lot of 'gay' websites are only focused on either gay guys, or men wanting sex with men - there is far more to the 'gay' community than this.

So, here's a new one to add to your list: http://www.queensspeech.com
…launch is scheduled for the start of January and will be a true social network aimed at the entire ‘lgbt’ community - not just men looking for a ‘quickie’.

Unlike other the other gay social networks, QueensSpeech will aggregate content published by its members to build topic-based, magazine style frontpages that summarise what’s being discussed throughout the community, by the community. We're calling this concept 'Conversational Publishing' - and we'll be giving it a 'glossy finish' to meet the needs of the non-contributing members, readers, or lurkers as they're sometimes called.

Anyway, thanks so much for starting this conversation - i can't wait to see how it progresses...

Re: BigJock, a Silicon Valley gay social networking start-up

Good luck for bringing a great new social networking site to the gay guys in the States! As you recognized, the UK already has a few aimed at different markets, including Jake for business professionals and OUTeverywhere for pure social networking - its members organise around 5,000 events every year and its forums have more than 5 *million* posts. It's been around since 1995, so good to see the States catching up with the UK for once ;)
