I'm all for simple databases but not as web applications.
I've worked with a lot of clients over the years using excel for what should be a database, I've tried lots of times to move them to other solutions but it comes down to a few things
1. They already know Excel
2. Old doesn't can't learn new tricks
3. They need it off-line
4. They already paid for Office and even if X is free, X de-values Office which is their security blanket.
5. If they can get over that stuff they've probably already moved to Access.
BTW personally I'm a UNIX man and bit PostgreSQL advocate, but most of my clients don't agree with my opinions about it.
