VentureBeat: Bubble Motion, trying to bring voice SMS to U.S.

  • Brian McConnell · 2 years ago
My previous company, Trekmail, did a lot with mobile voice messaging from 2000-2005. That worked OK once it was integrated with a mobile email product, but as a stand-alone product it did not go anywhere.

Most handsets can already do this via MMS. MMS is a better system, as it pushes the audio or video message to the destination handset (although MMS is often poorly implemented by handset manufacturers).

Do you really think there's enough demand for this? Or is it trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist?

Ummm...Voice SMS? seems like something I would use. Trying to send voice message through MMS is crazy. MMS Its too complicated to use. If I had to use MMS to do that I would rather send a text message. I am hate texting so the idea of sending a message without having to type appeals to me.

Personally I can't wait until I have Voice to Text on my phone. So instead of thumbing like mad I can just speak an SMS.
  • Sarah K. · 2 years ago
So I would have to buy a new phone to get the bubble icon? Why not just turn on the VM icon?

I don't know anyone's mobile number. Now I have to create a new phonebook entry for BubbleTalk?

Fundamental flaw: people hate checking voicemail.

A couple of quick clarifications on Pinger.

    - Pinger doesn't require a software download. It works on any mobile phone that can receive an SMS. We do have some cool optional applications for Treo and Blackberry users that enhance the Pinger experience.

    - Pinger is carrier independent. That is the sender and the recipient don't have to be on the same carrier to exchange voice messages.

So today anyone can send and receive a Pinger message on just about ANY US mobile phone. That's not true with the carrier-based solutions like Bubblemotion and won't be until there's an agreed upon, implemented and ubiquitously deployed voice SMS standard.

Bottom line if you're in the US, you don't have to wait for your carrier to deploy "voice SMS", you can try it right now with Pinger.

I tried Pinger. Very nice web interface. But
It adds an extra step to the whole messaging process. I got to call Pinger's number and leave a voice message . Pinger then sends me a text message with my voice recording which I have to forward to the person I intend to contact. I would rather dial a persons number directly and leave a message.

Pinger does have the option of entering your contacts in their website so you can dial directly but I would not want to list my contacts in their website due to privacy reasons.

Isn't SMS "short messaging service"? If so, doesn't voice based SMS defeat the purpose? If one doesn't want to talk to someone, send an SMS, email, or snail mail. Why does anyone want to talk directly into "voicemail"?
  • Ze Mode · 2 years ago
Jott doesn't require any software download either. Jott does Pinger one better by converting voice to text and sending an email. Both Pinger and Jott work really well and I use them all the time. Pinger has an easy mechanism to upload contacts and then accessing those contact via voice. You just say a name from your contacts and it picks it up. Very cool.

I want to be able to record a message and have it show up on there phone as a text message and they can respond via sms and it converts to voice on my end.

Voice SMS has been available in the UK for some time now, all you need to do is send an SMS to a landline and it works.

A man is trying a very unusual way to propose to his girlfriend. He wants people to forward an email to as many people as possible and he hopes that it will eventually get to his girlfriend. Details here: http://www.proposal-to-mary.com

Here is what he wants people to send by email:

You could help me a lot to spread my proposal to Mary – it is important that it is distributed as widely as possible so that it eventually reaches Mary. If you would like to support my proposal to Mary, please send the following text by email to a lot of people :-)

------------- SNIP (email text end) ---------------

WHEN YOU RECEIVE THIS, PLEASE HELP TO DISTRIBUTE IT TO OTHER PEOPLE!

For a long time I have tried to find a special way to propose marriage to my girlfriend Mary, whom I know for five years now. I wanted it very special, romantic and memorable, something our grandchildren would still remember.

And here is my idea: I will send out the proposal to Mary to 50 complete strangers, people I don't know - hoping, that they will forward my proposal to as many people as possible, which in turn forward it etc. And some day, I hope, it will reach Mary, after it has travelled a very long way. I know, it will take a long time and I am quite nervous…

From the poem MY Mary will know immediately that the proposal is for her.

I have created a homepage ( http://www.proposal-to-mary.com ) where you can find the current status of my quest. You can use the homepage to check if the proposal has already reached Mary (in that case it is not necessary anymore to forward the mail).

Once the proposal has reached Mary, I will put a note on these pages. Also I will publish there how many people have read the proposal so that everybody can see how far it has spread and that it is getting closer to Mary.

And of course you will find there what I am waiting for most: Mary's answer! I can't tell you, how nervous I am… Will she accept my proposal? Will she like the unusual way how she got it, through the hands of thousands of messengers all over the world?

Please cross your fingers for me! And please - help me by sending the mail to as many people as possible, to help it spread, so that it eventually reaches Mary.

    And here is my proposal:

Mary, please forgive me, as you know English is not my native language. And I am not a poet. But I mean it from my heart.

    My angel,

Five years ago, I will always remember the day When fate made us meet, blissful Alaskan moments in May Earth spun around us and a journey began Love, warmth, happiness, enough the years to span.

The longer it lasts the more grows our bond And with 80 still - of you I will be fond Whatever happens, I will stay at your side Through good and bad, together let us stride

No second with you was ever wasted
You are the sweetest I have ever tasted
We have spent so many years - why not a life?
Mary, will you marry me - and become my wife?

Mary, if you have received that and have recognized me, then give me a sign so that I can continue with the romantic part of my proposal…
