VentureBeat: DailyStrength — the health support social network

  • David Scott Lewis · 2 years ago
Rather than yet another Web 2.0 calendar or spreadsheet, it's very nice to see services like DailyStrength. Let's face it, everyone could benefit from a service like this at some point in their life.

Since I'm living in China, I'll be very interested to see responses to TCM -- Traditional Chinese Medicine -- what works, what doesn't. There's almost a reluctance of sorts to put many Chinese therapeutic herbs through double-blind trials. That's too bad. What will be needed are sites like DailyStrength to sift through medical propaganda. (Remember, this is a country that up until a few months ago allowed TV ads for things like breast enlargement pills and nonsense like this. And you can still see ads like this in print.)

However, to be truly successful, there will have to be some sort of reputation system to go with this. I can already see a lot of BS being propagated by developers of useless (and possibly harmful) drugs. There has to be a way to validate what one is saying, who is saying it, how much credibility they have -- yet at the same time providing as much privacy as possible.

Good luck to all the players, DailyStrength, CarePages, et al. And I hope WebMD and the like get the picture, too.

HI folks, I'm writing from WebMD....we appreciate you mentioning our message boards but wanted to point out that we have robust blogging community as well (see http://blogs.webmd.com/healthy-children/) and have large projects in the works that will be revealed shortly! :)

Another great site I came across that has all the hallmarks of being a category killer is fatsecret. Would be surprised if we weren't talking about it over the coming 12 months.

    Ciao

Medical discussion boards are a great idea, there is no doubt. But I recently found one that brings professional and intelligent health discussion with the fun of a great social networking site. It is called Medsocial, www.medsocial.com. I tried it because I heard it was where a lot of medical professionals go and that is true. But led me to stay on was the discussion of everyday people about the health situations they went through and the advice they have for others.

This is an excellent site, I myselfsuffered fromsevere panic attacks for over a year, As a man it was hard to share this experience with anyone, there should be more sites like this to offer support to show we are not alone and we do have likeminded people. There is a script available that can build a social network site, please consider ir and set up a new site like this, people need it great work
