VentureBeat: Flurry signs up hundreds of iPhone and Android developers for its analytics tool

Not surprised Flurry is getting that much traction. They have the best offering- especially on the iPhone. We use it religiously on a daily basis.

The tool is doubtlessly very useful!

I am not a big fan of AdMob. They make so much noise, but their delivery is pathetic. Does anyone know what play Google has in this space. I will be giving Flurry a try. The growth we are seeing on our iPhone application is huge and is often regarded as a true test of our overall growth. I simply need deeper analytics and Omniture is outrageously espensive for not much value add.

Looks like flurry is making extensive use of the Google Visualization API. Nice integration but I can only imagine that Google will provide an analytics frontend to their app store given how driven-by-data they are; and it should integrate in with Google Analytics.

Maybe flurry will move faster and with better focus; time will tell.

What about the iPhone AppStore? any clues?
  • Kenny Lee · 10 months ago
Actually, we use a combination of a Flash chart library, YUI, and home grown code.
Had Google's Chart API included the same flash capability they reserve for their own analytics, we probably would have used theirs.

As for app store integration, I believe we offer a more compelling solution. You wouldn't have to wait for publication approval before you could test whether or not a new version was collecting data correctly. And, like you said, our focus on analytics gives you things that an app store wouldn't consider, like custom event tracking.

Oh and we do support multiple platforms, something I doubt very much the Apple App Store would support. =P

Do you work for Flurry? If not, who is we?

Sorry for the confusion. I do work for Flurry. In my last comment, when I said "we" I was referring to Flurry. I listed my email in the last comment but it didn't show up. I am the lead developer for our analytics UI. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at Kenny at@ flurry dot. com or continue to post here, and I'll try to answer as I can.

Turns out that Pinch Media does not support Google Android. Medialets announced the support, but it is not there yet. Any help here would be appreciated. Anyone knows if AdMob does? Haven't heard anything back from them.
  • Kevin Villagomez · 10 months ago
Tania, you are right. Pinch is exclusive iPhone, which is good if you are iPhone only, but you are on your own with Android. I am not familiar with Medialets. This is the first time I hear about them. I like the Flurry product. My only concern is how will they survive without making money!

Thanks for the update on the tech used Kenny. Full disclosure: I manage the analytics engineering teams at Openwave and we have products (data processing/UI) in this space that are mostly purchased by telecoms. We've pulled in libraries from a few different sources as well and we also support the more traditional BI reporting interfaces from the big vendors. Google's chart/mapping APIs have some strange limitations you don't see in their own services.

I'm a big fan of giving application developers the data they need to build better mouse-traps. Seeing services like yours come to market helps everyone get better.

On the appstore point, I was referring to the Android store and not apple. I have to think that Avinash Kaushik and the group at Google are baking in application support into their analytics offering so that it supports both iPhone (800lb gorilla) apps and Android. Their mobile analytics to date is lacking but given Google's current focus on mobile they must developing it.

    Best of luck.

@ Sean - while no one can be certain what Google will actually do, our sources / friends at Google tell us they are focused on providing analytics only for G1 device usage only, not for applications. This could change, but in the meantime, we are laser focused on providing the best service possible (given tricky mobile limitations) for all to use today.

@ Kevin - My name is Peter and I work for Flurry. Regarding our ability to stay in business, Flurry is well funded and has plans later this year to offer value added services at a price. However, this will not affect the free analytics we already offer. We have no plans to charge for that. However, we will continue to add new features all the time, again free of charge. Our service is meant to provide developers key insights in how their apps are being used so they can continue to improve and thrive.
  • Kevin Villagomez · 10 months ago
Peter, thank you for the reply. I would for sure hope so. My major concern is that AppLoop went our of business already and rumors are out that Pinch hasn't been able to raise funds. That leaves only Flurry and Medialets. Dean (this article) states that you are not raising money. We have thousands of your agent distributed already and we want to make sure you (anyone of you) will be around next year.

    Thanks
  • Peter Farago · 10 months ago
I completely understand your concern, Kevin. In a tough economy, and in the world of start ups, longevity is not guaranteed. That said, rest assured that we have a strong balance sheet and will be around for quite some time. We love you as a customer and look forward to helping you grow your business.

Rumors about our funding from where? I'd love to hear the source of those, since Pinch Media quite comfortably did a seed round shortly after launching and did a nice follow-on round later in the year, which anyone can see by simply searching EDGAR. We're not quite profitable yet, but we're set for ages.

As for Android, we've built a client that does exactly what Flurry's does, but I'm not at all happy with the way it (or Flurry's) detects an application termination, and think still too inaccurate to release. The client will be out when we're 100% confident we've got a quality product, and not a moment before.

I can say Flurry feels its Android analytics reporting is very strong today, and I'm reluctant to say ours is better than one we know nothing about. I can say we've invested a lot into strong data gathering and rich reporting. The only way to really know is to compare the two offerings. Ours is available now for anyone who wants to evaluate - with real customers using ours in the wild right now. With live usage, we are already iterating on our Android offering and, of course, more feedback is always welcome and encouraged.
