    A reason for not mentioning eventful.com (similar to Upcoming and their popular Demand service) or even non-profit art & design-only TokyoArtBeat.com?

    Forgot eventful.com, but have added. The list goes on and on, if you're considering niche sites, which is another reason it is going to be tough to form a dominant company. We're too splintered in our interests..

    I use eventful on a regular basis. It has a few technical issues such as events showing up more than once, and their search is not quite as detailed as I would like, but I love it. It's has a wide variety of events, plus their calendar integration is great.

    SonicLiving has an event selection that's just as rich as going.com but with a much more interesting community element. It integrates with iTunes, Last.FM and Pandora so you can actually find shows that you want to see so you won't miss your favorite bands.

    how do these people make money...do not tell me ads...these cannot pull myspace kind of crowd...it is a tough survival in this nightlife/social events market

    With a company like Zvents, the opportunity is obvious. Who doesn't want a comprehensive index of events? Newspapers, radio stations, city information pages, sites are only effective when they actually feature everything; nothing is more frustrating that searching for something you know exists and it isn't listed. They can supply that. And yeah, advertising but not in the sense that you are thinking of with MySpace, why not premium placement for promotion of the activities? Premium content, premium features, etc.
