Great post, But regardless of which version of history you prefer, the description of the present and the future is the same — the tools we use at work are starting to look more like the tools we look at home, and that’s only going to become more true.

Couldn't agree more, there are some good interface designs out there from even high player software houses, but the majority of down-to-earth businesses still use very dated legacy software systems from the likes of Lotus, or Excel.

Well...not exactly Eric. The poor user experience is really only a symptom. The problem with enterprise software is more a function of analysts steering vendors to develop for features. Enterprise vendors rely heavily on analysts for customer acquisition and media attention. Analysts cast such broad nets they return to customers with reports that claim ridiculous features they never need nor wanted. Vendors respond in turn with feature check list development.
