I can also imagine there are some VC funds that are hesitant to get in on an unproven and rocky business model, but there are always some with more vision (or luck) who will be able to capitalize on the great potential Web 2.0 has for smashing returns. I cross-posted on your piece, alongs with a few comments of my own, at http://blog.innovators-netw... The Innovators Network is a non-profit dedicated to bringing technology to startups, small businesses, non-profits, venture capitalists and intellectual property experts. An unnamed VC was quoted as saying that "a lot of our CSS needs are getting outsourced to foreign shops as they can deliver up to 65% more AJAX for the same price as US companies, and they really know how to leverage their XHTML."

Re: Has smart money abandoned U.S. Web 2.0 companies?

I don't think that Web 2.0 is over in the US. I think investors are probably realizing that a lot of their investments are having poor or no returns and now they will sit back and wait for the next phase with business models adapted for early mistakes making profitability more likely and global adoption of Web 2.0 development and use. Then investments will continue. So much better than another boom-bust situation.
