VentureBeat: How Nvidia plans to get its mojo back

It is true that GPUs work better than CPUs for some tasks, but one has to completely re-engineer all existing software (O/S, core libraries, applications) to take advantage of them. That's why they will never replace CPUs in mainstream computing applications, but they have a chance in extremely low-power portables where things are still very fluid.

Huang is right on the money. The next version of Apple's operating system (Snow Leopard) is coming out this year, and features OpenCL technology which allows developers to easily tap into the power of the GPU. That's going to be a huge boost to the speed of high end applications, and it will only be a matter of time before other operating systems (Windows 7) follow suit. Pretty soon, it won't make sense to have a computer that doesn't have a GPU, which puts NVIDIA in a great position.
