VentureBeat: iPhone fart app pulls in nearly $10,000 a day

  • intrepidblue · 1 year ago
it's tragic that this is notable or newsworthy ... what am i talking about, if i would give up my blackberry (please don't hate on me) for a iphone, i'd totally be downloading this tripe.
  • MG Siegler · 1 year ago
Right, it's not that the developers or even Apple are pathetic, they're just exploiting a market that is clearly there. It's our culture that is kind of pathetic, but whatever, there are worse things everyone could be doing I suppose.
  • Giannii · 1 year ago
    This is depressing.
  • steve · 11 months ago
If it depresses you that people think that farting is funny, you should seek immediate help. Lighten up.
  • Giannii · 11 months ago
No, it depresses me that we waste so much money on useless "entertainments" in life.
  • Scott Janousek · 1 year ago
I thought there was already enough crap cluttering the appStore, now this development ...
  • Jay Cuthrell · 1 year ago
They say there is no accounting for taste. Yet, there is certainly financial trending to indicate the lack of taste.

So, I'll go ahead and ask....

Has anyone spent the time and money to contrast the system footprint of these elegant applications?

You know. A flatulence simulator shoot out of sorts.

How about you eWeek? NetworkWorld? Don't let us down.
  • shayne · 1 year ago
Im a developer, and I hate this stuff because I dont like how it sets people expectations up. BUT, the market does what it does.

In honesty it takes up a tiny amount of memory. Have a look in itunes when the fone is plugged in and you'll see these apps take up a tiny amount of space.

But yeah, I dont really like the devaluation of the quality of apps and what it means for folks like me who want to spend a few months on an app only to have that market bracketed
by thousands of $1 or bust crap-apps making $10K each.

My best friend just called the cops on me. The wireless was down and I had been wrangling with me all day. She comes by to smoke a bowl and I feed her a roast beef & swiss sandwich I had just made. I was making soup and she gets all needling me about my bad mood and how "that wasn't her problem" and how I have no right to be mad that my wireless was down for the last two weeks. I jumped up and down in mock anger and said "i have every right to be extremely pissed off" - not at her, the ROUTER - and she calls the cops. She starts going "I'm afraid, this isn't my house" and they wisely told her just to leave as nothing had actually, you know, happened. The whole time she's on the phone she's winking at me like "this is no big deal". well. i temporarily suspended her phone (that's right, i pay for her cellphone) until she gave me back the housekey (i have been an idiot of generosity to this person). i am so anguished, i really don't know what to do. so if they could make an iphone app to help me on this, maybe i would get one. other than that i can type much faster on my Centro.
  • Robin · 1 year ago
Wow! I'm stunned. That has to be the most amazing iPhone related blog comment I've ever read.
  • thesubjective · 1 year ago
i feel ya.....i just got a "member made" holiday card from zipcar and couldn't leave a comment on the snoman's grin and kinda freaked. zipcar.com/happyholidays/08/
Sent from a No reply email address so I just copied my rant and I looked up a few random employees on LinkedIn and sent them my ramblings. If I had been out and got it on my iphone i would never have been able to execute that sort of OCD. So you see...it cuts both ways.....and there in lies the full circle.....like that bowl we all clearly shared.....including the maker of the holiday card;)

You need to dump this "friend" right now.

She is a parasite who is abusing your generosity. Get her out of your life before she accuses you of violence and you end up in jail.

What's depressing about an app becoming succesful?

Get to work, boys and girls, and do some "serious stuff" if you like instead of letting your seasonal emotions be destroyed by a crappy attitude. I would rather have a hundred people busy creating apps rather than having them on social security costing me even more tax money.

    So stop whining, please. :-)
  • seasonaltaxes · 11 months ago
You mean you'd love your gov to save money without 'passing on the savings', so to speak. Which they all do. Oh my god, I'm whining, just like you are about tax. Oh dear, my 'seasonal emotions' are being destroyed!!
  • warzabidul · 1 year ago
Whilst the Iphone has it's fart applications there are some great developments where other phones are used for live streaming of video from anywhere to the web, gps apps are used to help with navigation.

Personally I like the idea that people who buy the iphone waste so much money on such an app.

I'll stay with my Nokia phones and the useful applications that run on it
  • J · 1 year ago
Are you like retarded? since the iPhone comes built in with a GPS you don't need a "GPS App" and there are already ways to stream video and music to your iPhone. Simplify Media is absolutely amazing and I wouldn't buy another phone just because of that app alone.
  • eric · 1 year ago
The limitations of the SDK are what is keeping developers from building serious applications. Until Apple opens the SDK to do things like you can do on a Blackberry, you are going to get more fart apps, voice recorders and games and that is about it
  • shayne · 1 year ago
Such as? As a developer I cant reallty find any limitations. Im sure they exist, but what are you talking about?
  • Karl Blessing · 12 months ago
The only limitations I can think of are the ones Apple imposes. Not everything that gets submitted gets approved for the app store, some of the ones rejected were far more useful than a far app.
  • Dan · 1 year ago
Come on! Lighten up people. This is funny stuff. There are enough serious/sad news going around, we could use a shallow one. There is a market for it, if I was 14, in high school I would definitely be downloading something like this... (and thanking god for it, as I'm sure, you guys would be too).

Besides, I think the guy who wrote this article was thinking what I'm thinking right now. I would love to have thought about it first. Seriously, 10k for a fart app that would take me a couple of days to write? Sign me up. I'm down.

It's a very short, but slippery slope from here to "The Crazy Frog" :(
  • whorfin · 1 year ago
who needs an iphone for that?
  • aljuk · 1 year ago
So... fart apps are ok, but jiggling-boob apps aren't?

So who exactly are the app store censors?
  • Das Moscas · 1 year ago
There could be an app that makes the fart noise "distort" according to the position of the iPhone.
    like
    prrrrr(tilt phone)prrfuuiiiimmmmmm
    That would be nice!

I think you have your facts wrong: it's 13,000 downloads *total*, not daily (12/20, according to him, saw 5K-ish downloads), thus $10,000 total. At least on the site of the person you linked to.
  • Fred · 1 year ago
I think the 13K download number was for 12/22 and the stats on the link page only went to 12/20. What i'm curious to know is if 14 fart apps were released and this one reaches number 1 and the rest are nowhere to be seen, what is different with this app? Are the fart sounds better? Maybe. But possibly the reason it has done so well is because it's released by Joel and he has marketed it really well.
  • Dan · 1 year ago
13,000 was just in one day... the 22nd..

iFart has unique features which make it more fun, also cool graphics and interface. As one reviewer called it.. "the Myst of Fart Apps" And.. because we know how to market. The next version's going to really blow people away.
  • Cryo · 1 year ago
Wow, some of you people have no sense of humor. Get over yourselves. Sheesh.
  • Rich · 1 year ago
Well I have to say that this is a sad day when "fart applications" are newsworthy. With so many other things to report on all over ther world. But I do have to say that it got me to go to itunes and check them out...LOL

reminds me of ring tone dynamic. didn't think anyone would actually pay for those either...oh well.
  • dave · 1 year ago
you know why? because it is *awesome* - my younger son got an ipod touch this year and the ifart app was a perfect match for his "here's a buck for one stupid app" budget (he loves real apps like band)...

don't you get it? people love stupid applications...just look, here you are commenting on some blog posting on some site that some small audience reads - is that any more a waste of time than pressing a button to make a fart noise? at least with ifart, you can share the love with people around you, as opposed to any blog where your noise vanishes deeper into the ether with each new passing post (buried, never to be seen again, and so what ever did you type for?)

I think Joel Comm is brilliant for coming up with a fun app that people WANT!
for .99 who wouldn't buy this app.

Sell your customers what they want!

  • John Doe · 1 year ago
I think that while I agree it is depressing, it is expected that the application sells in a society that also has no problems paying for celebrity gossip, TV channel likes of MTV, VH1, etc. @Christina hits the nail on the head by stating that it is what people want. I just feel that if people have money to throw on shitty apps like this (no pun intended), especially at times like this when, if anything, people should be smart with their money, all you can deduce is that they have turned into the very trash they enjoy so much/

Its not surprising Apple users would love fart apps, we all know Apple users love to smell their own farts as well because they all feel so high and mighty because they use Macs ;)

This again makes me happy to say.... IM A PC!

I think all you dumbshits have to much fuckin time on your hands get off your asses and do something productive and leave your I-phone,pod whatever products at home and see what the world is like with just your own senses in fact try to not touch a computer or cell phone for a whole weekend or something if your aren't too fuckin retarded to think of something to do without being told by the media
  • Rob Frankel · 11 months ago
Amazing, considering that iFart is getting AWFUL reviews from users. Also, intriguing, as our LittleWingman app is due out this month (http://www.LittleWingman.com) but is getting GREAT beta reviews! Go figure...
  • iFart · 11 months ago
Awful Reviews? iFart has a 3 Star average, and most of the 1 Star reviews were people with sound issues on their phone.. Most of whom had their phone muted.
  • Padushka83 · 11 months ago
I have the app. I bought it out of boredom. I got a chuckle and so did my bf ....

says nothing about intelligence...it's just silly humor. This coming from a typically serious person, who is studying The Russian language and is an operatic vocalist.

Being offended by it seems even sillier than the app its self. If I knew how to write these apps, I would be kicking myself for not thinking of it haha!
  • kevin Cargo Oswego IL · 11 months ago
I love farting. isn't offensive at all.
