VentureBeat: Losing Twitter followers? It’s not you, it’s Twitter

  • Liz · 1 year ago
It might just be me but I'm "defollowing" Twitters who overuse the service (for me, more than 5 or 6 Tweets an hour). It's easier for me to check on their profile later than to delete all of their chat requests or their blow-by-blow reiteration of the points of the meeting they are attending or what the next course of their dinner consists of.

Funny, but I don't mind personal messages or ones not directed at me, it's just the frantic overtwittering that irritates. I get very overtweeted and I'm not even following that many people.

But it is a fairly new service (a year old?) and people are still getting used to using it. It'll calm down...until teens become Twitter converts.

Certainly some people are with you in doing that Liz, but this losing of followers is a massive problem right now (see Summize).

Yeah, I saw it too. More than 15 people gone.

Also noticed within the past couple of days that I had lost a couple of DMs, though I couldn't tell you which ones.

I personally noticed two missing DMs as well, though like you I cannot tell which ones Mark. Thanks, wasn't sure if that one was only me.

"It might seem odd that Stone wouldn’t know if Twitter was deleting spam or inactive accounts,"
why? this is a company that posted it didn't know why it was constantly going down, the fact that they are clueless is a proven given now :-)

Thanks for the info. I thought it was just me.

I also am losing followers as reported, however to clarify it appears people I'm following are also losing me. I am definitely not a twitter spammer and noticed that I wasn't getting updates of people I follow. Visiting that twitter user's page showed that the Follow button was there, in all its naked glory, indicating I was no longer following that user. I hadn't unfollowed them, and clicking Follow remedied the situation. So it does appear that it's a deeper problem than some sort of spammer clean up.

Interesting Sean. Obviously that makes it seem more of DB error than spam clean up. Thanks for the info.

I have lost a 1/2 dozen followers recently. Makes sense that they could be spammers who have had there accounts deleted. I note that quite a few "businesses" have twitter accounts and I have a few following me. I expect some of these "businesses" are in the business of spamming, therefore I hope Twitter is deleting them.

That's quite interesting. I was loosing > 10 % for http://twitter.com/selfreferential without any obvious reason

I've been playing around with Twitter a bit today and experience a few issues, saw the whale for the first time :)

Great information. Indeed, many people have wondered why the number of followers would go up and down for no apperent reason. It has been more perplexing to see that while they get notified of many new followers, their net number of followers are dropping from time to time (Nwankama).
