Indeed, many people have wondered why the number of followers would go up and down for no apperent reason. It has been more perplexing to see that while they get notified of many new followers, their net number of followers are dropping from time to time (Nwankama).

Re: Losing Twitter followers? Obviously that makes it seem more of DB error than spam clean up. Makes sense that they could be spammers who have had there accounts deleted. I note that quite a few "businesses" have twitter accounts and I have a few following me. I expect some of these "businesses" are in the business of spamming, therefore I hope Twitter is deleting them.

Re: Losing Twitter followers? I am definitely not a twitter spammer and noticed that I wasn't getting updates of people I follow. Visiting that twitter user's page showed that the Follow button was there, in all its naked glory, indicating I was no longer following that user. I hadn't unfollowed them, and clicking Follow remedied the situation. So it does appear that it's a deeper problem than some sort of spammer clean up.

Re: Losing Twitter followers? It's easier for me to check on their profile later than to delete all of their chat requests or their blow-by-blow reiteration of the points of the meeting they are attending or what the next course of their dinner consists of.

Funny, but I don't mind personal messages or ones not directed at me, it's just the frantic overtwittering that irritates. I get very overtweeted and I'm not even following that many people.

But it is a fairly new service (a year old?) and people are still getting used to using it. It'll calm down...until teens become Twitter converts.
