VentureBeat: Offerpal launches game monetization service for MySpace, responds to criticism

We at SuperRewards agree its a huge and growing opportunity and are happy to see our friends at OfferPal getting on board. SuperRewards has been monetizing a variety of the larger apps on MySpace for several months but competition breeds innovation for the industry, and success for each company's developer partners. At the end of the day, claims on monetization rates are just numbers without a verifiable source, but we also see much higher rates for MySpace on average given the predominantly US user base.

As for Andrew Chen's comments about the space in general, they are largely fair and well founded from a historical perspective. We believe the most important element for overall industry success is transparency -- for the advertiser, the developer and the user. Whenever any party is tricked into doing something unintended, the ecosystem as a whole loses in the longer term. Only by providing honest and forthright advertising to consumers as well as real data to advertisers and developers can everyone benefit -- and so that's something we focus on SuperRewards. We look forward to continuing strong relationships with all three constituencies.

Offerpal Media launched our monetization service on Facebook, Bebo, MySpace and destination websites in September 2007 - we were in Beta for 4 months prior to that. Our vision was to be the "anti- incentive" , provide transparency and a great consumer experience. This form of monetization , accompanied by a positive user experience , was not even a gleam in anyone's eye at that time . Our initial application development partners had not even seen any other service such as ours. I am glad that competition is validating our strategy by following us. You only have to look at Alexa and Quantcast rankings to see how much catching up the late entrants have to do. We have invested and are continuing to invest in optimization and data mining technology as well as lead quality for our advertisers. As the pioneer and leader in this space we will continue to set the bar higher to benefit application developers , advertisers and consumers.

Offerpal and SuperRewards are both providing monetization opportunities within apps that have so far been limited to banner ad units (and therefore to Myspace and Facebook themselves). This is a logical evolution in this space and I'm sure it'll come to the free Iphone apps next. From an advertiser perspective, the leads/ signups generated from these channels will be fine, as long as the advertiser knows how to manage his own metrics. I think both of these companies will be successful, at least until the gatekeepers (i.e. social networks) decide they want a larger piece of the action.
