Speed test shocker: AT&T wins Gizmodo’s 12-city 3G megatest
Android is just one flavor, there is Windows mobile, Apple, Symbian,Palm,Blackberry, and some stuff around Ecos(linux) out there, Google just wrapped partners offerings and called it Android. I do not think SW/RTOS/OS has been barrier.

I agree the OS has not been the barrier, and there are many platforms out there. But given the current model of subsidizing handsets, the carriers will keep a lock on their networks as long as they can. If Android, OpenMoko or some other open-source platform creates a visibly superior product, the carriers will gradually start allowing them on their networks. That's still the slow option in my view, but still a step in the right direction.

Nice analysis, I'm greatful for Google because they've just given new options for "gold rush" (10mi) and I must say it's the easiest platform to develop ever, I've kick started a demo in 1 minute. It's easier than traditional j2me, I must say they did their homework after four years of development...
Biggest opportunity present from a developers point of view is the activities/events interface and also the XMPP built within the model just like traditional SMS. I just hope we move away from minutes and kilodata charges so we can really levarage these innovations with the users.
Another thing that the critics have been saying that I'm totally in favor of Google is the Android API's.. they are just awesome, it makes our lives easier, less coding more productivity.
