VentureBeat: Square Connect turns your iPhone into a remote control

  • Ronen · 1 year ago
As it is now, as soon as you get home you need to charge your iPhone. You can;t keep it on you using it as a remote control. It's a great thing to do, although using the BlueTooth might be more power friednly. If only iPhone could last more than half a day without charging :) iPod touch is a different story though, this is good.

A logical application for this is out-of-band content overlay services. So, if I am watching the Lakers game on TNT, the remote control knows it and can automatically pull up scores, chat UI with others watching game, etc. It's a conduit into interactive TV.

Here's a post I wrote along these lines:

Mark, thats a great idea... we have some similar thoughts, but I have to say I like the chatting with others and perhaps more directly relevant content. I'll check out your blog post or sure. Thanks for the comment!

This is neat and all but a $200 price point seems way too steep. Obviously I haven't played with SquareConnect's stuff but Isaw a demo from ioBridge lastnight and it seems the way to go. (no, I don't work for them.)

They've got a device which is more flexible that can control IR receivers, transmitters, servos, etc.

With their controller platform you can build web widgets to embed anywhere. It'd be pretty simple to build the widgets and make a webpage (public or private) to control the IR transmitter and then it's controllable from an iphone or any thing else.

I guess it doesn't fit into the "big brother nelson rating" space like S.C.'s does but personally I'm happier w/ a bit of DIY anonymity.

Why not buy a modern touchscreen remote like the Philips SRT9320 instead? It's about the same price and probably a better solution alltogether...

Check what I wrote about this using the IPhone as an Universal Remote a while ago at Mac Rumors, you might find it interesting and it will tell you a lot about these capabilities added to smart phones and that it can also be done affordably. Check the post by me PixelOz:
