VentureBeat: Star Wreck Studios builds permanent community for collaborative movie making

Isn't saying that "there are 100,000 actors but only 700 movies" kind of like saying that "there are 100,000 investment bankers but only 700 investment banks"? There must be a reason for why not everyone would-be actor gets involved in a film: the end users want quality, and that's why producers want good actors. You can't improve the quality of a product such as a film forever with technology. What is often observed with these open source ventures is the endless belief in technology overcoming other barriers such as competition for talent.

This looks a lot like the Rootclip.com concept I've been hearing about. I can't wrap my head around a production that big though.
