Solar PV installation, at least for residential, is a low margin, low volume business that is best suited as an additional revenue source for contractors. Just take a look at Akeena Solar, a public company, and see the millions they have lost over the years (my guess is SolarCity is in the same boat, but since their not public, it's just an educated guess).
Solar PV is going to become a commodity item, installed by contractors and experienced DIYers. I see no real need for companies who specialize in solar, but I do see the need for companies to supply the tools and service that will allow everyone to install a system on their roof.
If Sungevity follows the software avenue and provides the services mentioned above, I think they will have a great future!
