VentureBeat: Tech trends for 2009 — this time global

Good post, especially the last part about Asia. Do not you think the US can still keep their lead by having a more flexible immigration policy for engineers and talented people and by the entrepreneur spirit you have in some part of the countries like in the Silicon Valley??
  • Bernard Moon · 12 months ago
Thanks, Guillaume. A more flexible immigration policy and substantially increasing H-1B visas will help lessen the changing tide. I believe Silicon Valley's culture and infrastructure is unique and will maintain its entrepreneurship lead for decades. The U.S. in general has the culture and infrastructure that encourages entrepreneurial ventures that Asia has to catch up to, but am I also referring to advances in R&D. Leadership in basic and applied research is essential, but will the U.S. have the scientists and engineers to continue its lead for the future? Right now, it doesn't seem so.

Love your article, I only have one point of contention -- which you do partially address.

I would have to disagree with your last point. From what I have experienced the ultimate talent of Asian engineers to reverse engineering or engineering on spec. I rarely see anything completely innovative come from (albeit very effective) Asian engineers.

This is obviously a gross generalization, but it is my experience...in general. Will they increase their share? Yes. Will they overtake the US? No.

I would actually predict a resurgence in corporate innovation in the US in the coming years. More and more engineers are losing their jobs and jumping on board of start-ups.

2009 should be an interesting year.

Thanks, Brandon. I generally agree with you that many engineers in Asia lack a strong creative element. To make up for the lack of creativity and innovative thinking taught in their education systems, companies such as Samsung have developed programs to teach their engineers and employees how to become more creative. Beyond my nicely wrapped op-ed, I believe it will be years before the culture and creative environments in Asia catch up to the U.S.

Even when the U.S. was lagging beyond in math & science test scores, I believed that our unique creative and entrepreneurial culture filled the gap that continued our leadership from startups to Nobel prizes in science. But now I believe there is cause for concern with the changing mindset of the next generation. Some of this I address here:

    Agreed Bernard.

As a former part of the American industrial product development machine, and now as a relatively independent entrepreneur, I appreciate your perspective.

I will definitely be back to read your additional articles.

"Video game makers should take note: Titles that deliver more value over a longer period of time will bring in more money during tough times — and that’s exactly what PC and online games do."

--I'd have to agree with you on this one. However, I still put my money on online games rather than PC games. In the past few years PC game sales have been declining.

As global markets have been going down recently, what is your prediction on virtual economies? Virtual markets can rake in billions of dollars, and they have been doing so in the past few years.

While sillicon valley is still a hotbed for innovation there are strong contenders in Houston metro, North Carolina triangle and Massachettes 128 loop who generating start-ups who will revolutionize many industries.

Nano technology will become very big but the nano tag will be dropped since this term can be applied accross multiple industries. I see portable power and filtration devices coming to the public to address disasters and developing countries who need to skip the political coruption phase to help the populace.
