Perhaps Mike's becoming increasingly paranoid, considering some of the encounters he's had in the recent past; encounters that would probably make him think twice about appearing publicly in what he perceives to be hostile territory. But to your point, he shouldn't then accept in the first place.

And for what its worth, I think statements like this are part of the problem: "And I think he underestimates his own ability to deal with a roomful of people who, at this point in time, need him far more than he needs them." Attitudes like that lead to delusions of grandeur and with that, mutual respect - in an industry where we just need to work together in a respectful manner - goes out the window.
