A couple of questions come to mind.
1) will Tesla start producing the electronics and the motor as well, or will that continue to be imported? Also, when will they start producing their own batteries? As it is, they simply import nearly everything for the roadster.
2) Why not consider approaching some of the different business like NuCore that want to produce cars, but are going to import from China. By working with these companies, they could allow a company like NuCore to install their own body on top of a built up frame/powertrain. In fact, I could see such an arrangement creating a number of companies with different models on the same frame/powertrain/batteries.
3) Why not consider the idea of a hitch and a DC input plug next to the hitch? If you do that, it would allow other companies to create small (or even medium size) trailors that generate electricity. It could be turbine engine from CMT. Or it could be based on a regular ICE. Or how about a fuelcell? Or possibly a stirling engine. The idea is simply to allow the car builder to drop the size of the battery back, but still allow a hybrid approach for long distance driving. Once that happens, it will make it possible to have more room in the car, and at a much lower price. Basically, multiple manufacturers would be able to get in on providing inexpensive electric only cars, or can provide multiple different accessories.

Re: Tesla keeps it local, plans powertrain plant for Stanford Research Park

I must say this is a great article i enjoyed reading it keep the good work.

Re: Tesla keeps it local, plans powertrain plant for Stanford Research Park

You’re website has very good infos.
