I've tried using some alternatives: mypunchbowl, crush3r, etc. - all of which are much more feature rich and powerful.
In theory they should have worked better in terms of communicating the events details, integration with 3rd party services and more. However, most of the invitees never opened the invitation. Maybe it's because nobody likes me, but once I talked with people individually, they were very confused by the non-evite services.
The evite brand is so strong that people know what it is immediately. The open the link that lands in their e-mail without hesitation.
I think it's possible to displace evite with something that actually works, but the key will be in brand building.
