VentureBeat: Twitter in Gmail will further distract me from using it for email

  • Wuensch-Media · 1 year ago
I added this TwitterGadget and I like it. Gmail ist getting more and more a center of daily business with these gadgets.

I added it, but really hate the entry box. I too find it ugly, and that takes more away from the gadget then is usefulness. I'll stick with something else until they update the UI. I would like to see an option or a new gadget that would provide JUST an entry box without the timeline. Something like twitterfox works better.

That's not a bad idea of having a super-slim, text-box only option. I'll put that on our ToDo list. As far as the UI goes, its pretty tough to come up with something that works in only, what 140px wide. Will look into it though...

Thanks for the response. I would love to see an entry only box. I do understand the space constraints. The biggest problem i've had is any time i paste something into the box i get scroll bars, and they take up almost the entire box so i cant see a word that i am writing. Maybe, if it was lighter on the graphics or the graphics were below the entry box rather than to the side taking up precious width, it might be better. But you obviously have a better handle of your gadget, just my 2C.

You may like Yonkly, too. It's the first "create your own microblog" that integrates with twitter: http://yonkly.com

One of my biggest wishes with all of the Gmail gadgets is to be able move them back and forth from the left side of the screen to the write. Right now Labs lets you do that only through enable specific extras, but there's no way to move your Remember The Milk or Twitter gadget to the right side. My main problem with this is because now fully expanded, my left column is 6x longer than my actual email.

Does the id and password pass through twittergadgets servers or is it direct to twitter.com?
  • TwitterGadget Developer · 1 year ago
The user/pass is processed in an ASP page on the TwitterGadget server and talks to Twitter through the TwitterAPI. There would be no way for TwitterGadget to function without going thru their API, so the ASP page has to live on the TwitterGadget server. If you are concerned about privacy, I can assure you that the only place your user/pass is stored is in your cookie (on your own computer). We do NOT store anything on the server-side.

'Sup dawg, we heard you like to tweet, so we put Twitter in your Gmail so you can tweet while you mail.

"Now I just need a way to combine Google Reader with Gmail"

If you have Firefox with the Greasemonkey add-on, there's a custom script that allows you to do this. It works really well, too!

Or if you feel like GMail isnt progressing fast enough try:
    Better Gmail 2
    http://lifehacker.com/software/exclusive-lifeha...

works with only the new version but can add both reader & calender as collapseable tabs above or below the Gmail window.

So, from what I gather, people like the functionality but are a bit put off by the UI. Perhaps a good round of UI talks with the other developer is in order, at least for the Gmail version. Since TwitterGadget also works from your iGoogle homepage (as a larger widget), the Gmail version (smaller one) might indeed need a UI more suited for the limited space that gmail allows for widgets. Thanks for all the honest input guys... :)
