VentureBeat: Who rules real-time search? A look at 9 contenders

  • Daily Retweet · 5 months ago
We'll get some contact information on our site soon. We've been working on the backend like crazy to launch some great new features that the size of Twitter has made more difficult than expected. Thanks for the mention and you can reach us directly at info at dailyrt dot com for anything you might need.

Great round up, Kim-Mai! Your readers might also be interested to know that we (OneRiot) made some changes to our realtime web ranking algorithm ("PulseRank") this week. Here's a link to our blog post http://blog.oneriot.com/content/2009/06/oneriot... (as it happens, using the same "Iran" query as an example). Many thanks, Tobias @ OneRiot

I just want to cheer Tobias here. He is doing a great job in following up with people's opinions of OneRiot.

    Keep it up man :)

Twitter is like a breath of fresh air on the Social Media scene. I have been on it for just a few weeks now and I have met several interesting people. It is a platform to network with people you would like to meet in real life.

I am really interested in how these realtime engines work behind the scenes.. does anyone have any technical info - is it all just done using calls to twitter's own API ?

XMPP is a push-delivery mechanism - not a real-time search technology. All XMPP does for Collecta is to deliver search results that are derived from whatever back end search technology they have onto a web page as soon as they are available - but it doesnt make the actual search any faster. Other companies refresh the screen is real-time using AJAX. Even Collecta appears to ultimately uses AJAX/COMETfor this purpose.

I am a big fan of XMPP - but its not doing anything for real-time search.

This is an interesting list. Might I suggest the addition of the real time search engine that uses natural language contextual search: http://twitterjobsearch.com?

Personally for twitter user name live searches, I would suggest www.tweexchange.com

This is an excellent article. It is also perfectly timed given how interesting this space is getting. I would like to bring to your attention the newly-launched search engine TipTop at FeelTipTop.com which is arguably the most sophisticated of the lot.

There are many alternatives to these, which if covered would have been much nice

I think that if you consider the excellent Twazzup, you should also look at microplaza (in the same vein, but more structured/aggregated content - http://microplaza.com). Besides, it's a pity none of these tools can track tweets by location...

You forgot one that I would argue has the most potential. It's a start-up that's just started making a little noise called Wowd. Real-time search is great, but what these companies lack is the ability to get coverage across the entire web. They can index a small set of target sites well, but what Wowd's does extremely well, is deliver real-time results of what's most popular across the entire web. Their P2P architecture allows for them to scale efficiently and effectively as well as get real-time coverage from any and all sites in their "cloud." Here's a quick demo of what they do, but you should check them out as soon as they publicly launch. http://blog.wowd.com/wowd_blog/2009/07/short-wo...

checkout real-time social search engine www.bliipa.com. Although is on a beta phase the results are drawn from friendfeed, twitter, google blogs, youtube, digg, metacafe and technorati.
