VentureBeat: Windows Mobile 7 phone release now seriously delayed — could be as late as 2010

  • JB · 1 year ago
According to Yankee Group analyst Carl Howe, Microsoft is delaying Windows Mobile 7 to include features found in Android and the iPhone!

Who cares? Windows Mobile is hideous anyway. The iPhone is great for me, and if you don't like Apple then there's Android. This is just another sign that Microsoft is on the way out!

I'm assuming you haven't taken a look at WM 6.1.
its really really nice looking. =]
  • rob · 1 year ago
    WM6.1 nice looking?
I've got a HTC TyTN II here running WM6.1 and I wouldn't call it "nice looking" at all. In fact I wouldn't call the TyTN2 a very good phone or WM6.1 a very good phone OS at all. I actually think WM6.0 was a little better, as it happens.

When my phone contract is next up for renewal, I'll probably ditch WM devices. Not sure yet what I'll get instead, but WM6.1 is a big helping of failsauce from what I can see at the moment.

The iphone isn't really up to scratch (1/3 G too slow too buggy, too insecure), nor is the android (way too early to judge this one yet, but my initial response is - Is that the best that a $120 billion dollar company can do?). Bit too much hype here.
There are nearly 3 billion phone out there and very few of them are iphones or androids.
    A little perspective please.
I know everyone is desperate for good news, but really the android isn't even news - yet.

Seeing we are entering/in a depression I doubt that consumers are going to be rushing out in their billions to buy either the iphone or the android in a hurry.
This won't stop companies from renting a crowd to line up next time they release a product, but it should give you pause for thought before you throw your money at them.
Google's share price should be about $275, and Apple is overpriced. Mark my words.

My iPhone has made an noticeable positive impact on quality of life. Its also become my lifeline "second computer" when I don't have wi-fi for the laptop. Microsoft is going to need to hit it out of the park to make up for Longhorn-like delay and WinMos very bad reputation.
  • ron · 1 year ago
Dean: when citing the fact that the percentage of Androids and iPhones are very small considering 3 billion mobiles are floating around the globe, you should also state the fact that very few in general are smartphones, most are "normal" mobiles (or "Cell's" for you across the pond ;-)). Also, the Android was announced a week ago, so citing numbers here is a tad foolhardy.

If you compare the Mobile6 Plattform to the software of the iPhone, it looks like WfW 3.11.
Nokia has realised that there is no money in the software platform, thus intends to give Symbian away as OSS. Android is OSS, and Apple uses it's OS X SW to flog it's hardware, this has always been the "Apple strategy". Where does that leave the MS Mobile platform? Since there are currently myths in the making of how some independent developers have earned huge amounts money with Apple's App Store, I don't see MS gaining much ground with developers. IMHO we will see the MS Plattform slide to under 10% share of the mobile phone market by summer 2010.

Why is nobody commenting on the obvious here?

    1. IE 6! SIX! How many years will that be out of date by 2010? This is a seriously disrespectful flip-off to anyone who might buy it.
    2. That screenshot is ugly as f***!

They're making everyone wait that long for a warmed-over pile of poop? If I were tied to Windows Mobile, I would be steaming mad.
  • Dustin · 1 year ago
Ok, let's state the obvious...go ahead and try to install Internet Explorer 8 for the PC on your WM device. It won't install. My point....the version numbering system is different for WM versus a desktop PC, this should really be obvious.

Secondly, that screen shot isn't accurate...Windows mobile has never been available on a wide screen device however, Windows CE was. Someone photo shopped that into existence.

Furthermore, for all you Mac hippies out there who continue to think you're going to take over the PC market with every microscopic shift of market share...THE IPHONE SUCKS!!! It's Apple's lame attempt at telling you what you want to do. It has nowhere near the capabilities of Windows Mobile.

And finally, for all the conspiracy theorists out there....Microsoft is likely kicking back their release of Windows Mobile 7 for two reasons as stated below:

1 - Operational screen shots of Windows Mobile 7 hit the internet earlier this year, while they may be fake, they do carry incredible likelihood to Microsoft's visual style, and as such Microsoft would be inclined to redesign the interface so as not to relax any excitement for their new product.

2 - Microsoft has been in a tight battle as a result of the inefficiencies of releasing a new operating system when having to coordinate with both the phone manufacturer and carrier. As a result, Microsoft is (as stated publicly) discussing what measures can be taken to ensure the timely delivery of OS upgrades, fixes, and enhancements to end users.

Say all you want about Windows Mobile devices, but I can do a lot more on my phone than you can on your iPhone.
  • Dustin · 1 year ago
...they do carry incredible likelihood to...

    I meant "likeness"

IE 6 mobile is NOT IE 6 desktop. IE 6 mobile uses the same rendering engine as IE 7 desktop. The 6.1 update uses something between IE7 and IE8 desktop rendering.

Just a bad versioning thing... WM version numbers a little behind desktop.
  • IT Expert · 1 year ago
Yeh - why not IE 7 or 8
  • Big Country · 1 year ago
    my 2 cents
The corporate entities that tie-in their Mobile devices within the scope of Active Directory, Domain/Application Controllers, etc... the wait for this won't be that big of a deal. Trying to implement such inter-connectivity with I-Phone is very difficult within the confines of Apple's Enterprise offerings (is there any?) (no im not talking about sharing music or photo's of my friends...), I would lean towards Android because of the possibilities J2EE provides (the original Enterprise architecture), again, to wait an additional year is not a big deal in my opinion.
  • xplode · 1 year ago
OK they mean that Internet Explorer mobile will have capabilities like the IE6 desktop browser, its current version is IEMobile 8.12, maybe for Windows Mobile 7 they will include something more like the desktop IE7 (IEMobile 9/10)
  • ZX227 · 1 year ago
@ amy who said: Why is nobody commenting on the obvious here?
    1. IE 6! SIX! How many years will that be out of date by 2010? This is a seriously disrespectful flip-off to anyone who might buy it."

im sorry to single you out amy, because im not trying to start a flame war. however, i think i know why nobody was commenting on what was only obvious to you and a couple other people.

first of all, the article states that the screenshot is showing Explorer6 rendering in IEMobile on Windows Mobile 6.2 due out in late '08 or early '09. It is not the Windows Mobile 7 released in late '09 or early '10 like the rest of the article talks about and you confused the screenshot for.

second of all, to give my opinion, i think your "ugly screenshot" looks not so bad compared to the current WM 6.1 like on my Blackjack II. I could also comment towards people like george who claimed a certain touchscreen phone caused a "noticeable positive impact on quality of life". I guess that means I been living a higher quality life even longer since windows mobile has had touchscreen phones for years. I was using handwriting recognition, voice dialing, MMS and video, and reading apple's website on my touchscreen Windows Mobile PocketPC before anyone had heard of an iPhone.

lastly, i hope i did not come off too much as a fanboy for M$ or Windows as i really prefer Open Source Software like GNU/Linux such as the Google Android OS is based on (really has my attention).
however, i must also point out that people forget that Apples iPhone OS is based on OS X which is based on Steve Jobs' OS NeXT which was based on FreeBSD. i feel that Apple should have a more open development kit for the iPhone as is based on community-driven software. now they choose what gets developed on their platform without releasing clearly their changes. Richard Stallman who created the popular Open-Source license the GPL also made comments similar to these when he talked about 'tivoization'. He tried to correct this in GPL v.3 which was released the same day as the iPhone. please look into it.
one last thing that really gets me is people forget that Windows Mobile is based on WindowsCE, and is NOT based on the desktop versions like Windows XP or Vista. in fact, unlike the desktop version, many parts of WindowsCE including the kernel is open source, similar to the linux kernel. this is done so the manufactures can change the kernel easily to run on their various hardware platforms and architectures which vary by manufactures (of in this case, cellphones).
personally, as i see cellphones with internet usage taking over desktop usage soon, and most of the developing world will first see the internet from a mobile device (like a cellphone or ultra-portable). i look forward to competition from all Mobile Platforms including Palm, Nokia, Apple, to RIM (maker of blackberry) Google, and all others not mentioned!
    .... sorry about the rant.

THE PROBLEM IS that Microsoft did not change its UI approach from Windows to Windows Mobile and it does NOT WORK for a screens that are 2"x3". To have a scroll bar on a phone is one of the most ignorant design concessions I have ever seen. Just try the iphone for 2 days and it will make you think your windows mobile deserves to be in a museum (yes, that includes wm 6.1). I had a wm device for over a year and waited until apple released the 3g iphone, I will never go back to wm until they change the UI approach to match a person using it on a phone.
  • Karl · 1 year ago
Eric....Read the Microsoft forums, Windows 7 will no longer be a stylus driven system. It will be "Finger Friendly" hence the Gestures, Personally I like my WM device, don't see my self changing any time soon that's for sure. Although Android looks very promising. I love the fact that I can write what ever applications I want for my WM in Visual Studio. Depending on the complexity of the app, I can have it running in no time. Given I'm not making GPS Software with Maps, but simple stuff is easy. When Ifone can Remote Desktop, Check Email, Surf the web, WITH OUT THE APP STORE(what a crock of crap i want to chose and make my own apps) as flawlessly as my WM can I may...may applaud them.
  • Karl · 1 year ago
ALSO!!! I would like to See Apple Use a stylus, some of those apps have small buttons too. Yes, you can buy a super special Ifone Stylus that memics human skin, but come on, let me go to walmart and buy a dang stylus

I love Microsoft and the direction they're heading in with Windows Live and Windows 7, but here is no denying that they are woefully behind the times when it comes to the mobile market. I have a Blackjack II with WM6.1 and while it works for everything I need (browsing could be better) it's lacking anything that sets it above the rest. Email is dominated by RIM, Apple owns all things entertainment, and there are another hundred phones with their own OS's that do a combination of the two. The only reason I stick with WM is because I do everything through Windows (Outlook, Windows Live services, Windows OS, WMP, Mesh, etc), but if they don't start integrating all those flawlessly into their phones then I might as well switch to Android or Blackberry where at least I can do most of them really well. Microsoft has an opportunity to make something special, a device combined with software that could integrate all aspects of a person's digital life. The upcoming Windows Live updates are a big step, but if my phone is left out of the equation then there is no reason for me to stick with WM. I may be an MS die-hard, but I'm no fool and I can't wait forever.
  • Khalil · 1 year ago
Well for people who like WM but want a better user experrience try the HTC touch HD or Diamond. I've had a touch HD for a couple of weeks now, and its amazing.

The problem is that no business user will by an iPhone. The man in the street who likes to have a fashion accessory will buy an iPhone because he doesn't have to collect email on-the-go and then reconcile them with an exchange server together with calendar, contacts, notes, word docs and excel files. Try modifying you monthly sales spreadsheet on an iPhone or a RIM for example; even if you have the 3rd party application to enable you to edit the file you'll have distroyed all the formatting!

As much as certain people hate MS the truth is that the vast majority of work computers use MS OS, Servers and desktop apps. If you want to be 100% compatible then iPhone, RIM et all isn't going to do it for you (I know I'm a business user and I have a Blackberry bold sitting in my office desk gathering dust while I use my HTC Raph).

So the delayed release of WinMo7 only affects business users such as myself in that I hate the UI of 6.1 and I would like 7 NOW. Does the delay mean my company are going to switch to providing iPhones for the managers and engineers??? Hell No!!! If I need to create a specific little application for a specific purpose can I do it for an iPhone??? Hell No!!! Could I do it easily for a RIM device?? Hell No!!! Maybe it's possible for Android as it's Linux based but that remains to be seen. My point is the easy availability of development tools for Windows applications is also a factor in the decision which platform to invest in.

The easy availability of software for the WinMo platform is another big plus. I travel world-wide on business. You find me a turn-by-turn satnav application for iPhone or RIM where I can download maps for every country I happen to be visiting at the time and install it on my device?? I think you'll have a hard job finding one. On WinMo there at at least 3 that offer close to world-wide coverage and I'm sure there are more.

So to paraphrase a famous quote for business customers, “the demise of MS has been greatly exaggerated!"

UGGs became ubiquitous among Southern California surfers and Southern California downhill skiers, and from there, Uggs, which name comes from the Australian
