VentureBeat: Xbox 360 defects: an inside history of Microsoft’s video game console woes

  • GearsofPeace · 1 year ago
Fascinating, well researched, thoughtful article on the console wars. Thanks!

    One funny observation: Shane Kim:
We won’t know the winner, he says, until somebody sells 100 million units.
Uh, sure. Let's just forget Bill Gates' boasts that the "first console to sell 1o million wins" Now Kim is claiming its 100 million?

I'd be fascinated to see you explore how Microsoft manipulated the gaming press and public with their supposed metrics of what constitutes victory in the console wars. They pushed two metrics repeatedly: First one to sell 10 million, and "attach rate". Neither of these metrics were ever used before to determine anything in previous console wars, and both metrics are based solely on one thing: which console launched first. It is no wonder Microsoft pushed those two metrics as the sole determining factor in the war (as opposed to profits, for example) what is amazing is how obediently the gaming press followed along.
  • Johan Sundstrom · 1 year ago
Uh, attach rate has been used for a long, long time in console gaming circles.
  • elmer · 1 year ago
Not really. In previous generations attach rates were fairly similar while install bases were extremely different. Going by attach rate the XBOX1 would have been similarly as successful as the PS2 when the reality of the situation was obviously much skewed. This particular metric hasn't been relevant until there were less obvious differentiators in the market, which hasn't happened until this generation. In fact, it's not even happening in this generation. The Wii is selling more software and more hardware, which is obviously more relevant to the market than more software per hardware. Even then, Microsoft is turning to ever more arcane metrics like 'highest 3rd party attach rate' and 'highest accessories gross revenue since launch'. It's all a bit of a farce. On VGChartz they hold a monthly competition for best 'spin' on the NPD numbers. Microsoft usually wins these.

I just bought xbox 360 2 days ago and its Jasper Unit.
I hope that this unit will last longer or will be the best solution to RROD issue.
I will monitor closely to my console and report them here if got problem.
  • Clay Abney · 10 months ago
Bill Gates should be ashamed for sending the xbox 360, at its high price, out into the market knowing that the board would inevitably overheat and fail. I bought one for my son and within two months the rings of death appeared. That's pathetic. The dealer would not stand behind it and said it's Microsoft's problem. No, actually it's my problem. I spent hard-earned money on this POS. If Microsoft is the company they proclaim to be, they would immediately replace these faulty systems with a new one THAT WORKS at no cost to the comsumer, no questions asked. I don't need them to tell me how to fix it or who to contact. They are the ones that sent this monster out knowing it would fail. What kind of good business is that. Waiting on a reply.
  • Austin Shau · 1 year ago
Dean, with long-surviving Xbox 360 machines still at risk of flaming out today -- my best friend of 24 years just got a red-ring a month ago, in late July of 2008, nearly three years after launch and cutting it close to that three-year warranty -- stories such as this continue to be relevant, and I for one think you did a good job of conveying it without resorting to sensationalism. To release and repeat these facts should help not only Microsoft, but other manufacturers in general to rethink and bolster their best-business practices for product launches.
  • Jeremy · 1 year ago
My console died in May '08 (still within the 3-year warranty window) but I still had to fork over <$100 to get the damn thing fixed. The unit was actually manufactured earlier than the three-year window, but it was purchased well afterwards though... Jerks::FAIL

    GREAT ARTICLE!
  • Lilly · 1 year ago
Can someone tell me how to return the console for repairs? I bought it for my son in Dec 06 as a xmas present. Bought the package deal at Best Buy. It went into RROD mode in April of this year. Does anyone know if it is still covered under warranty? Is it even worth getting it fixed? That thing cost me alot of money, not to mention all the games since then. I'm a single mom raising a kid and spending that much on Xbox 360 was not worth it as a consumer. The best part of the whole thing was seeing how happy he was when he opened it christmas morning.
  • ordigas · 1 year ago
Just contact support. They should be able to help you. My guess is that you are still covered by the 3 year RROD warranty, meaning you'll have to pay nothing. They will tell you if that is the case when you call.

Funny finding this article, I thought MS had finally solved it with my last RROD console, back in Sept. 07. I went after them with the BBB. I had a brand new console with the mfg date of 9/13/07 delivered the day before Halo came out. A year later on 9/11/08 that same console has RROD. It is still intermittent at this point, but I'm ordering my white box to send it off again.

This is either the fourth or fifth busted console. Last go around MS actually mailed me a broken console, it RROD on first power on.

So if some are saying this article is late in the game, I'd like to say it is still valid. As a hardware engineer I'd say it is almost criminal how MS has let this junk out the door, but as long as they are willing to take the hit on their budget, and replace my console with a smile, I'll keep sending them back. Maybe they have it licked in 08? I think not as they are trying to cut costs.

The important lesson is spend as much as it takes up front to get the right product out the door, because it will cost you a heck of a lot more latter. How many engineering hours does a billion dollars (which is probably conservative) equal?

This article was excellent. We all knew the 360's hardware fails in every way imaginable, but this consolidates that information, and continues to bring the matter to light. As forgiving as 360 fans are, we really do need to continue pushing for justice. Even if Microsoft is looking to make future 360 owners have a better experience, the rest of us are still going to be left up a river without a paddle. Our systems will die sooner or later. I want to know I'm being taken care of now and in the future. I enjoy my older systems still today, but the same will not be said for a majority of 360's years from now. That is unless the refurbished crap is ended here and now. Microsoft: Cut your losses and respect your fans. If you really want to continue on with the whole refurbish operation, lifetime warranties are in order. You owe it to us. No other consumer group would put up with this kind of behavior and treatment.

I'm on my 6th bloody system. The games and Live keep me coming back for now, but there will come a breaking point.

And Andy, you know what D V D stands for don't you? Try again. And quit nitpicking.
  • CD Baric · 1 year ago
What was not mentioned and what Microsoft depends on is the free labour of millions of users who lose access to their game console and have to return it for repair.

Microsoft should be held accountable for all the lost time and additional effort and cost of dealing with their failed electronics, especially in view of their obvious culpability. Microsoft knew or should have known their customers were going to experience a significantly higher that acceptable failure rate!

It would be interesting to calculate the true cost on an XBox 360 when you add up all the lost gaming time and the cost in time and materials to return failed units.

Just like it's operating systems, Microsoft depends a lot on the free labour and lost productivity of it's customers as a given.

    CD Baric
  • yonderboy · 1 year ago
Did you just refer to loss of gaming hours as lost productivity?

Why don't you just sue MS for emotional distress?

My word... I've read all these comments and your's is the most insanely outrageous!
  • idrinktea · 1 year ago
All he console makers have a cadre of people they pay to repeatedly play the games to find bugs, you twit. By insufficiently funding their testing dept MS pushed the costs onto their customers. Some people would have been OK with a buggy console but many have avoided the 360 because while the games may be nice, the platform is still to buggy for us to buy.
  • Noko440 · 1 year ago
If consumers sit back and accept what Microsoft have done, they are giving Microsoft license to act the same way in future. The 360 is a slap in the face to consumers who have paid hard earned money for a rushed, faulty product. Only to find that adequate measures haven't been set up to fix the problem that they have created through their own greed.
As an XBOX fan, you should be applauding this comment. Then getting on his side.
Don't defend Microsoft... You paid them, not the other way around.
  • mixtech · 1 year ago
Us consumers have also learned from Microsoft's blunder. Apparently, Sony isn't doing very well either with their defective Blue Ray Drive. Consumers have turned to the industry of console modding (although not a new concept) has yielded real and ingenious solutions to a lot of hardware problems of certain faulty consoles (Particularly the Xbox 360) At least for the early part, modding has been the better solution for problems such as RROD and offered reliability at the expense of elbow grease, added money and the warranty.
  • Incognito · 1 year ago
What defective blu-ray drive? I haven't heard of any serious defects with the ps3 drives. Even the much ballyhood dvd drive problem on the original ps2 pales in comparison to the problems MS has had with the 360. The RROD problem made my decision easy when I bought my ps3 last xmas
  • Saleem Khan · 1 year ago
Dean, nice work. Once again, you've demonstrated that with a true journalistic ethic, it's possible to produce the kind of coverage of the video games sector that I often argue it should aspire toward. Congratulations again on a job well done, and thanks for your hard work.

I laugh while I read this cause as we speak my "11th" xbox is in repair! I told my service rep " I just want to own my console for 6 months before I have to send it in!" Its not even a point of anger anymore,it has turned into a full blown joke in my household.
  • and yet · 1 year ago
You could buy all the PS3's you want but that won't help you play Halo or Gears or N+ or Splinter Cell or or or or or or.

We stay with MS because of the software/live/warranty. Prolly in that order. And by warranty, I mean the best warranty of any device you own, all told. (which is the east MS could do!)
  • arlyn · 1 year ago
however, Splinter Cell is on the ps3, N+ is on the PSP (not to mention the fact that it's a flash game you can play online for free).

Gears is a renter and I've never liked the Halo series.

The only reasons to own an xbox360 are RezHD and Ikaruga.
But even those aren't good enough reasons.
  • I-Haet-M$ · 9 months ago
And yet, there is no Metal Gear on the 360... Also, several great games are also available on the PS3...

A friend is already in his 3rd 360, my brothers are on their second and their original black XBox came with a defective drive... And Miscrosoft still deserves loyalty? Uhhh... no...

My choice was easy... A white, faulty console, or a shiny, ridiculously looking black one? I went for the latter...

great article. i hate my boyfriend's xbox 360 mainly because the fan unbearably loud, he too has gone through three consoles and he doesn't even play very much.
  • Craig · 1 year ago
I swear, you people trying to use the LOUD thing. I just don't get it! Your microwave is loud, your PC fan is loud, your ceiling fan is loud.

You are probably like those people who slam coffee makers in their reviews because the little beep to let you know the coffee is ready is...wait for it... TOO LOUD!

It's a fan, it cools things, and if you are that freaking anal about a FAN blowing..you need to see a professional. Seriously.
  • Dan · 1 year ago
    Wow... fanboi much?

The 360 fan is louder than my PC when gaming, louder than my TV when playing games, louder than my PS3 when playing games, louder then my Wii when playing games, and it remains loud when turn off and it is still charging my controller.

My microwave and coffee maker may be as loud... but I don't care because they are not putting out music and sound effects to immerse me in the act of preparing food.

Noise is a legitimate gripe when audio quality is important and other gaming devices are not nearly as loud.
  • j · 1 year ago
The ps3 is whisper quiet. Why can't the 360 do the same? Luckily the fan isn't loud enough to be a huge detractor, but it is somewhat annoying.
  • Stoplying · 1 year ago
I think you hate your boy friend's 360 because he has more fun with it than he does with you!

Why is it those without girlfriends, or possibly boyfriends... Let's start again...

Q: Why is it those without the ability to have any kind of relationship beyond their vibrating video game controller upon the 'genitals' - and their moms making some delicious chocolate chip-oatmeal cookies with a nice tall glass of milk, side order of blankey (Thanks mom! Go away now. New Gears vid!) - feel that they must make rude comments about someone else who made an unassuming comment? Especially when it's completely off-topic? Especially when the original commenter is apparently female?

A: This is due to the apparent nature of what we, in the real world, like to call 'assholes'.

In your attempts to prove how awesome you are, you prove otherwise. To be a man, children, you must work hard to be a better person.

Let the next batch of children comment upon that, dear sirs and madams. Preferably, without the vibrating controllers on their aforementioned 'genitalia'.

    Superb article! Thank you!

You know, I really wanted to buy a 360 but opted to get a PS3 instead since I've never heard any complaints about PS3s getting something similar to RROD. I just can't be bothered to send a console back for repair or replacement and then waiting for it to get back. It interrupts my gaming and that is an impartant part of my daily routine. You may say I have no life, but sometimes all I want to do when I get back from a stressing day of work is play. I can't get my gaming interupted or I might just kill someone! But seriously, a console should at least last for six or seven years, not one.
  • LoganCrusher · 1 year ago
I hope this doesn't jinx you, but I just had my PS3 die. In fact soon after my Xbox 360 died, I convinced my brother that all 360s die and he should get a PS3. Within a month he had gone through two bad PS3s. I just wrote it off as the world's worst luck. After my PS3 died - I'm not sure what to think. I am on my 2nd PS3 and 2nd 360. One of my brothers is on his 3rd PS3 - never wanted a 360 because he was afraid of RROD. My other brother is on his 1st PS3 and 4th 360. I hope they figure out a way to get these new game systems to last so I don't have to drop back to playing my old Dreamcast.
  • justgimmecoffee · 1 year ago
I really enjoyed this article. I'm an original xbox owner and thinking of getting a new system, either an XB360 or a Wii but probably not a PS3. I've heard of the RROD issue, but had assumed it was a) not widespread and b) resolved long ago. It seems that neither of those are true.
At this point, I will be waiting at least another six months before taking another look.

    -B
  • heresacoffee · 1 year ago
Actually, the RROD problem is still widespread, but failure rates are considerably lower on newer consoles, for a variety of factors, including improved manufacturing process. So your assumptions are mostly correct. Yes, the problem is a) not widespread (on consoles bought today) because it was b) resolved long ago.
  • idrinktea · 1 year ago
    Yeah but:
Microsoft is still recycling that enormous pile of steaming 1st gen 360s into the loop by sending them out as replacements for newer machines that die of RROD. So, you buy a newer 36 to attempt to avoid the problems that plague the older 360's but yours dies anyway (even the newer 360's have a failure rate > 10%). You send it in to get repaired & you get a lemon back which will only last a year.

With a process like this, you know that the RROD problem is never going away until MS both solves the problem in a new Xbox design and stops sending out the ticking timebombs as replacements.
  • Boo Ya · 1 year ago
MS does not send out 1st gen 360s to replace the 2nd and 3rd gen 360s sent in. That would be against the law. You can not downgrade an item that a customer sends in for repair. Must be same or better.
  • Chris · 1 year ago
You are wrong. Research this on the web. MS *does* send out 1st run 360's as replacements for 2nd and 3rd run 360's. It is not illegal, because they are all technically the same product. It is clearly, however, unethical.

This repair problem is a huge, huge cost to MS. A billion dollars is not trivial, even to MS, it represents their profit for about one month. If they had to replace 360's using only the newer run hardware, the cost would skyrocket even more.
  • Farinoh · 1 year ago

4-20-09 FAILURE OF #3 --Sorry guys, I did not do the 12 guage thing! Just went back to Best Buy and met #4. MS has me by the short hairs.
  • Craig · 1 year ago
The new consoles have MUCH better cooling than the old ones and don't produce as much initial heat. This article is beating the dead horse for the older consoles.

I have 2 that are fine. If you are that worried about it..buy the thing at Best Buy and get the 2 year plan on it. If it dies...they just hand you a new one. Easy.
  • B G · 1 year ago
    Mr. Gates? Is that you?

You shouldn't be forced to spend extra money to have Best Buy replace an item that should just work in the first place.

What does it matter that you have two that are fine? I got one that wasn't fine. It didn't last a month. It's still happening at an unnacceptable rate.

As far as I'm concerened, the horse won't be dead until MS solves the problem once and for all. There will always be a percentage of defective units, but let's see them get the failure rated down to under 5%. After all, they've been making the things for three years now.
  • Twist · 1 year ago
The really sad part is that I have 3 working Atari 2600's in my attic but I am on my third Xbox 360. I got mine in January 2007 and it got the RRoD a few days after Halo 3 launched in early October 2007. They sent me a replacement with a bad DVD-ROM which I sent back less than a month later but do to multiple mix ups at the repair facility it took me until sometime in late January of 2008 before I had a working 360 with a working power adapter again (full story on my blog).
  • MrEvil · 1 year ago
The reason your 2600's still work is due in part to the fact they each probably have a few pounds of lead in them. Lead/tin solders are better than modenr ROHS (Reduction of hazardous substances) solders. The other part of the equation is that the electronics in the 2600 aren't very miniaturized. Modern solder being almost 100% tin is also susceptible to the phenomenon known as tin whiskers. Just like with paint, when they took the lead out of solder it made it inferior.

I've opened a 2600 before and their circuit traces are rather large as are the solder pads on the circuit board. This leads to less chance of a contact breaking free of the board through thermal expansion/contraction.

That's not even counting the fact that the 2600 has no moving parts apart from the switches on the unit.

It's such a shame. Because the Xbox 360 is such an awesome system! The RROD happened to me just last night. It's my second time now. This system was 6 months old. My previous system lasted a year. That system got the RROD, but it occured when I turned on my 360. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes I'd get the RROD.

What happened last night though, totally caught me off guard. I was playing Geometry Wars 2 and doing quite well. I was about to beat my own high score on deadline. When all of sudden. My 360 came to life and attacked me, ahhh! No not really, hehe.

Seriously though, my screen went black and there was the RROD. Staring me in the face. This 360 had a major heart attack. It just instantly died. It won't work for anything. It's flatline. I guess something inside it. Just gave out. So now I'm waiting for that box from MS. To ship it for repairs. I'm actually glad it happened now and not in November. When Gears 2 comes out. I'd be more pissed.

I tried explaining to the agent on the phone last night. That I don't want a refurbished system and the agent, who I assume was an Indian man. Judging from his accent. He kept telling me, "no sir! we fix your system, you get a refurbished system." But I want a newer model or a new system. I said and he said "No sir. It does not work that way, refurbished only. Only refurbished" I couldn't get through to him. Now I'm afraid I'm just gonna get another 360 time bomb.
  • st33med · 1 year ago
Wait, the screen turned black and your Xbox 360 RRODs? Doubt it. In my usage of RROD'd Xbox 360's , the console either RRODs when you turn it on or the game freezes, the picture distorts a bit with pixel lines, as I would call them, and squelching noises come out of the speakers (usually). Then, you turn off and on your 360 and the RROD pops up.

It sounds like you had the four red lights instead of three, meaning you had your component/composite/whatever video cables pop out on the Xbox 360.
Check your sources before you post or contact costumer support.

Microsoft is still in a chain o errors, recently I got the RRoD, send my console to the repair center, they sent me back in a couple of days the machine whith a free month xboxlive gold membership, everything was fine at least for two weeks when suddenly it start to frozen every ten or fifty minutes, they have our confidence and have the oportunity to fix up the terrible image that a bad strategy of production has made in the consumer.

I thought it was a good read. Sure we have all heard it before, but I think that the overall presentation worked well and this is the best historical narritive that I have seen detailing all of the issues together in one piece.

I'm hoping that MS learned their lesson and uses this to their advantage in the future.

    Great article Dean,

The failure rate of the 360 console is anything but ancient history. My brother-in-law’s console just perished this past month and in our house the 360 has the lowest “attachment rate” of any of our systems. Why you ask? Because in the back of our mind we always consider that it could die at any time.
  • graffic · 1 year ago
I was the owner of an Xbox360. I was because I sold it when I didn't have the time to play.

When I see the xbox360 now in the area I live. Is a white box that the people patch to play pirated games, and they use it until they get their rings.

So is an investment related to: how much do you play and how much the console is gonna last. I'm sure that if you're not a hardcore gamer playing only once per week. If your console fails after 6 months doing that you're going to be angry.

It aint that hard folks - spend an extra $50 at best buy for their replacement plan. I bought my xbox in the summer of 06. The dvd drive just crapped out on it last month - I was able to take it back to the store and even upgrade to an elite for just $50 extra. The whole process took maybe 20 minutes.

With the RROD being a well-known issue just a few months after the launch of the console I can't believe more people don't take advantage of plans like this (from BB or wherever).

and the 360 owns ps3 in the one area where it counts - playing games. My ps3 is turned on only for blu-ray movies. The janky PSN just can't compete with xbox live. It is free, but like most other things in life you get what you pay for.

I spoke with Dean a while back when my 3rd Xbox died of RROD. This was a couple months before Microsoft extended the warranty of the console. Between Dean and IGN fighting the battle I had already lost I managed to get into contact with Peter Moore and a couple of phone calls later I had my console fixed. I dont know if that console still works because I sold it to someone and bought an Elite which is still running strong.

Microsoft should consider themselves lucky that aside from the RROD issue the 360 is a very nice piece of hardware with some excellent features. I own a PS3 and Wii and a few games for each but i hardly ever use them. I own around 60 games for the 360 and play it daily. It has nothing to do with brand loyalty and everything to do with my opinion that the best games have been on the 360.

This is a great article that puts all the information in one place, and hopefully every electronics company can learn the lessons that MS was forced to deal with. It was a terrible situation but in the end they did the right thing. Im sure it hurt them in the long run but it didnt kill them and you know what they say about that.

Great article Dean. I think this is the info that a lot of people have been patiently waiting to hear from someone. And even after everything is said and done, I am still one of the Xbox 360's biggest fans. People can say what they want but aside from the RROD the rest of the MS gaming experience is truly amazing. With XBL, Marketplace, the upcoming Netflix deal and Major Nelson's interaction with the gaming community, Microsoft has really knocked this generation out of the park in almost every aspect. I really see no need for a PS3 or a Wii. At one point I thought I would get at least one of those but I really don't see the need to own one of them now.

I'm on my third 360 since buying my first in December 2005. Although having to send back consoles for repair has been inconvenient, I always found the support to be understanding and efficient (my first console failed in February 06). Had I been asked to pay for the repair, or had it taken an extensive amount of time to get it back, I would have been annoyed. Yet, on both occasions I have payed zero, sent out and received a new unit in the space of 14 days and been compensated with free Xbox Live Gold service.

Since buying my 360 in '05 I have had no problems with it. I have had minor difficulties, but Microsoft has taken care of me every time. Sure, in a better world we wouldn't have had the three lights in the first place but in retrospect I think Microsoft made the right decision in releasing the 360 when they did. In terms out outdoing Sony, I think Microsoft has it in the bag... and as for the Wii; can we even call that a gaming console anymore? As a gamer, I'm certainly not as interested as I was two years ago.

Conclusively, at this point I am completely satisfied as a 360 owner. Even if I have had to go through three different units. Affordable, high quality gaming made for GAMERS, and a company that actually stands up and admits its faults and takes care of its customers; I couldn't ask for much more.

    Sorry Dean, but... yawn.

They screwed up. They're doing their best to take responsibility and address it. If they're a little slower than we would all like, well, huge corporations are about as nimble as a super tanker.

Most importantly, I think the state of the console race would look pretty much the same as it does now even w/o this.

Excellent Article,MS stinks me twice with RRoD. Xbox 360 should be defunct as a game player and people who want to waste their money on Xbox 360 should just send the money to some charitable organization.
  • Actualise · 1 year ago
It was all actually just a ploy by Microsoft to thwart people who mod their box. I.e. they assumed that modded boxes could not be returned under warranty.

The problem was that people modded their boxes (DVD drives) using software methods - enabling them to un-flash that software without a trace before sending faulty consoles back to Microsoft.

    So this strategy backfired.

L O L at the MS fanbois! Nearly everything MS makes is a pile of garbage. The RROD issue just highlighted this fact. They even had to recall EVERY single console in some countries like Aus/NZ. All the people who continually support MS are the stupidest consumers you will ever meet. They don't even realise that MS is still in 3rd place overall, seeing that Sony has a dominant lead (people seem to forget the ps2 is still active and selling, it doesn't matter if it's from another generation), Nintendo second, THANK GOD!

I must admit as a XBox360 owner that the RROD issue is the biggest issue I ever saw/experienced in electronic. However, the full year ahead and the games you bought for the console might explain the forgiveness of the fans. I wish that Microsoft (and other companies) learn from this experience.

while i agree with this article 110%, i have to say Sony has had a free ride from the press overall. i find sony worse in such as the have had issues since the ps1, the lens issue on the ps1 where to boot games to had to flip the unit upside down, ps2 orginal model lens issues, ps2 slim model ac plug recall. where was the press to say sony, you need to recall your machine. while yes microsoft did wrong , i have two 360's in 3 years and each have been sent back once (so far ) for reapir. we need to also remember, sony is as bad with the same situation. but no one has called them out in the past.

does the 360 have a design flaw? YES . Has Microsoft done anything to fix it? YES and NO, YES they extended warranty to 3ys for the RROD by referbing units and took a $1+ billion loss for it and they have redesigned the possessor to run cooler. NO because they sending out flawed units back out. Sony never did this with the DRE issue on the PS2 and that problem was more wide spread than the RROD , nor will they do it for the Blue Ray problem that is starting to show up or the CELL dying problem.

Ive had both systems scene launch ,
360 1 RROD and referbed by MS
Ps3 2 Blue Ray drive Deaths replaced under store warranty, 1 CELL death sent to sony and they charged me to fix it

I agree with the sentiment by so many others. What a wonderful insightful article. This article is an example of why great journalism is so valuable. The article isn't sensational nor is it a slam, it's objective.

More stuff like this is what's needed. Articles like this really reflect the maturity and high standards the business can achieve, amidst a sea of juvenile vituperation. I love my Xbox 360 and I'm on my third unit. The games are great and Microsoft really creatively got some good stuff going. I also love my PS3 and appreciate its fine qualities, but ultimately I end up buying a lot more games for the 360.

I won't be playing any of this generation's consoles for these specific reasons:
    1) Xbox 360 quality problems as mentioned here. I wouldn't invest in a lemon so why would I want to with a Xbox 360 no matter the software.
    2) Sony playing with SKUs and backward compatibility removal (here in Australia we have been screwed by Sony so many times with the PS3 that I have sold my PS2 and won't be playing any Sony products for perhaps a long while).
    3) Nintendo Wii has no real appeal to me as an adult and it is not much of a real step forward with the exception of the motion control (fun at first but not a long term one for me anyway).

It all may sound like sour grapes but hey it is my money to spend and these are the reasons I am giving this generation of gaming consoles a pass. Ahh that is a relief, Dr. X...thank you for the therapy. :)

The bigger question is how will this effect sales of the X-Box III which people have speculated to come out in 2010? Will this turn gamers off at launch?
  • Vic · 1 year ago
I must say this was an excellent article. Second Microsoft has given me alot to think about now and also when the next consoles comes out should I wait see what the failure rate is I never had a console fail like my brothers 360 it died twice and I've been gaming since the Coleco was out lol.

Every system I've had has had issues mostly Cartridge and disc reading issues who doesn't remember blowing on cartridges or flipping the PS2 upside down lol. But that took years of heavy playing to happen this RROD happens about every 6 months and since I hardly game anymore and my older brother moved away this 360 gets the lightest use of any system we ever had and its failed twice in the span of about 2 years.

The other problem I have is recomending friends buy a 360 when its likely it will fail the guy that took over manufacturing said he was still finding problems this January that is truly scary to me. This isn't counting all the systems my friends have had fail.

Even with this its a good system at the core but I don't like feeling cheated and sitting around for a month waiting for a system to come back who want to spend 300 on hardware that in my mind is gauranteed to fail.

I've only had my 360 since February, but it's still working fine. I doubt I will get the RROD. See I think the problem is ventilation. I only keep my 360 on for a maximum of 6 hours, and that's with an Intercooler. Most of my friends who have gotten the RROD don't take care of their console. They leave it on all day, even when their not playing it. They think it's like a PS2 or something. These are expensive and high tech. systems we have in our hands nowadays, we need to start taking care of our systems instead of abusing them.

For a "professional" writer, this story reeks of amateurism. Most of the evidence is pure speculation from a perspective that does not represent sensible business. The mainstream Xbox 360 owner does not know about the RROD or how widespread the problem is, and it is not a factor for the majority of prospective Xbox 360 owners. The manufacturing problems may be a factor why the Xbox 360 has not yet been further reduced in price, but is not the sole or even primary factor in that decision. And the RROD cannot be blamed for the Xbox's sales against the PS3 - the difference in sales minus the MGS4 factor is negligible. More likely is the Playstation branding and Blu-ray's market dominance as factors, but I would be hypocritical in combating speculation with speculation.

I bought a Wii last year and have often tempted to buy a X360 as well. It has a larger number and greater breadth of games than the PS3 and the Wii. Very nice article! I bought my Xbox 3 months ago and I have 100+ hours on it and so far so good, no issue. The unit is not too loud and with an ambiant room temp of 22-24 celcius after 5 hours of 4 players halo3 coop the air coming out of the back was a little warm at most...quite good. It's a newer falcon model and while they arent RROD proof, I guess they improved them quite a bit. I can imagine that the newer Jasper will end RRoD once and for all!. If only they would dump the old hardware and send new units or even mass-replace the ticking bombs out there...

Upon purchasing my 360 I was fully aware of the RRoD issues but still liked more 360 games, the achivements system and xbox live was the better choice. PS3 was interesting but I only knew 1-2 person that had the system and the online looked not up to par (but is improving as they told me recently) I also own a lauch day Wii but ironically it's in the process of being repared ... The graphic chip fryed.

Anyway I look at it this way: with the 3 year rrod warranty and the improved falcon I have, I am assured of getting a working xbox until the next generation arrive...so thats good with me...and until it break, if it ever does, I'm having a blast on Xboxlive and i'm really enjoying my purchase.

    happy gaming!

Got the RROD last month. Fixed it myself. Cost $7.

If they would have just given a press release on how to fix it yourself, the 15% of the population that is competent enough to unhook the clamps and screw in new bolts would have just fixed it themselves instead of paying $100 to send it away for a month.

The other 85% of the population would have had their competent friends fix it for them or give up and send it in.

But yeah, Microsoft could have saved a lot of money and a lot of face by just teaching the public how to fix it themselves.
  • Jasten · 1 year ago
No one should deny that the RROD was a big blunder on Microsoft and the 360. However, setting aside the hardware faults, when the machine is running as intended it's pretty darn impressive. As someone that absolutely hated the original XBox and wanted nothing to do with Microsoft entering the console wars, I have to say they did a fantastic job at making a machine that brings us into the next generation of gaming. XBox live alone is a huge achievement and every 360 owner I have talked to is clearly happy with the system when its working. More importantly, as Americans its about damn time that we support our local industry and stop sending all of our dollars overseas.
  • Dave Orton · 1 year ago
Every last bit of the 360 is built overseas.

It is marketed and sold by an American company, just as the PS3 is (SCEA).

At least the PS3 has an American designed and licensed GPU that stays attached to the motherboard. :-)

Thank you for taking to write this article. It really shows the price of rushing to market and exactly why you need high yield rates before you go to market.

In the end, it was a) Go to market first and have 360s break or b) wait to fix the 360 and get swallowed by competition. With the Wii's current sales I'm not sure which choice was better for MS.

I own an xbox 360 too and i gotta tell you that im not happy with it either. It wasn't built to last for more than 2 years. On my xbox the disk tray gets jammed every time you try to open it and now it won't read any of my games. It continues to say unreadable disk, un playable disk, and un recognized disk. • AK · 1 year ago
Well I was hoping to actually hear some new insight as the article suggests but alas it just reiterated the same news from a year ago. It was well written I admit but there wasn't anything new.

I work in the returns department of a major electronics retailer and in the last year I have seen returns of the Xbox 360 drop to levels below that of the PS3.

The failure rate is about the same but the number of people returning the PS3 because of buyer's remorse is higher. I'm not sure if it's the cost, the perceived lack of games or the lack luster online experience that is the driving factor.

We almost never get Wiis returned. Though we do get some both on buyer's remorse and failure but the rate on both is lower.

Another factor that might be why we don't get as many 360 returns is because of how well MS handles the return and repair the 360. I guess they got a lot practice when they were still in the middle of the bulk of the problems that the 360 had.

All three systems have great games and do relatively well. The Wii did what the other two hope to do in attracting non-gamers. The 360 has the best line up of games and best online experience. The PS3 has the best total package. It's a great time to be a gamer! This holiday season is going to be awesome!

I worked for one of the companies that does distribution for the Xbox on the West Coast. We had a huge amount of the Red Rings of Death failures. It was so bad we had to begin to do %100 testing on them. After they were removed from the shipping containers from China. We were reworking 1000's of them. Those things were junk. I have been out of that company for 1 1/2 years. So I don't know if they got any better. But from what I saw I would never waste my money on one.

Our 360 crashed with the red ring of death last week, after having it only 7 months. Microsoft is a big company taking advantage of the little guy (the general public). And the customer support is a joke since its difficult to reach anyone who can speak understandable English. Anyway, we are less forgiving than many 360 customers. My loyalty will stand with the company who can produce a quality product, and its NOT Microsoft. As far as we are concerned we are fed-up and finished with the 360. After ours gets back from repairs, its getting traded in for a PS3

It might seem that Microsoft’s reputation has not been tarnished by the high failure rate of Xbox 360 consoles as consumers continue to buy, however most consumers are in the frame-of-mind that the Microsoft has finally ironed out the Xbox issues and new consoles won’t suffer the RRoD etc.

But what happens when Microsoft releases their next console, how many consumers will remember the shoddy manufacturing and poor after sales service of the Xbox 360 and wait till the second or third generation is released. This could have a huge effect on the next console, especially if Sony or Nintendo release their next console at the same time.

Microsoft has a good foot-hold on the console market now but we will have and see how many consumers have been scarred by Microsoft’s blatant discontent for its customers.

................. wow, that is something to know. MS should shut off their shells and go back to Windows ... wonder who is going to win the console war this holiday ... Sony or the 360. I honestly think Wii is going to hit 100 million regardless and 360 will barely hit that, as for the PS3, once it drops to 300 or below it will have a bright future of hitting that 100 million mark but it would take it a while.

and yes, i'm a ps3 owner ... never bought a 360 for many reasons, and one of them is the RRoD and MS's hardware, software and early launch failure.
  • exbox · 1 year ago
It's unfortunate that he doesn't have the root cause of the vast majority of the fails ascribed correctly, indicating that "The hardware engineers worked mainly to address the overheating of the graphics chip from ATI. The chip was overheating and causing both the chip and the circuit board to warp, cracking the joints that were held together by the lead-free solder". While there was some level of problems with the Pb-free BGA's, the main failure mode was thermal fatigue of the leaded C4 connections between the GPU die and it's organic carrier. The underfill had too low a glass transition temperature for the thermal environment (hence the improvements in heat sink etc) and so the joints were no longer properly protected at the upper temperatures brought on by the consoles usage. Jaspar has shifted to a material with a significantly higher transition temperature and so this failure mode should be eliminated. It's the same root problem that nVidia is having with it's GPU problem (same underfill chosen by TSMC and with Microsoft's GPU...).

" 'If you take the question of whether it was the right thing to try to be first, the answer to that is definitely yes,' Bach said in July 2008 "

This is basically where I feel the real problem stemmed from. Pushing something onto the market to meet a impossible deadline.

In reply to the above post ($199 Arcade cheaper than Wii). Yeah, the $199 price tag ropes one in, but you do get the "gimped" 360 with a 256 MB memory card (1/2 the "paltry" 512 MB Wii internal storage). To do any of the serious online/gaming stuff that 360 pretty much owns these days, you gonna need to drop the $$ for a 360 HDD. May as well buy the next set up, which is of course $50 MORE than a Wii.

What I don't get is why people continue to support a console that keeps dying. I keep reading things like this is my 7th RROD. I personally own two Xbox 360's my brother owns another (making three in my home) They all get used to varing degrees. both of mine were "first run" models. They eventually went Red Ring of Death, but once I got them ventilated, I had no problem. Phone support however... that was a pain getting them to send me the box to have it repaired. However I actually got my machines back quickly and haven't had a problem since.
Maybe I'm just a lucky one.
Frankly though. The cost of the units and the actual workings of Xbox live in compare to the other online services (granted I've not checked out the Wii Wi-fi recently but I have poked around Sony's) makes it in my opinion worth the troubles. There is a learning curve here to be certain. But I don't think that microsoft is trying to take it's customers for granted (unlike the feeling I get listening to Sony's press releases) I think their spin doctors are doing a lousy job of saving face.

What do Microsoft executives mean when they apologise for the mistakes they made with the XBOX360? Mistakes? They make it sound like they simply forgot to make sure the console worked reliably before they put it on sale, orf forgot to replace defective consoles, or forgot to tell the truth about the failure rates of the consoles when asked by the press. What nonsense. These were not omisions, or accidents, but a deliberate policy of lying and evasion designed to delay the revelation of the damaging information, and the apology for the "mistakes" the final part of the deliberate strategy of damage control, to attempt to make the former disgraceful behaviour look like it was inadvertant.
Wake up. Companies are there to make money, nothing else. They never have cared about the customer and never will. And the truth is something they tell eventually if they are forced to. You don't get to be the head of a large corporate entity or division because you are nice or have good morals. You get there because you claw and fight your way up there and because those above recognise your ability to play hard ball and get the job done, regardless.
I am sure Microsoft would do this all again exactly the same way if it had the chance to go back. They have their successful product, and to hell with the customers.

Hmm... Nice article but a little tired of hearing the rants and raves of a depressing group of , fan-b(i)ased, old faithfuls. The global gaming industry markets have changed (for better or worse, you decide, online console gaming and networking which you all have microsoft to thank for, which the Wii has pretty much crapped out on). Sure, maybe microsoft rushed their product, and took a few shortcuts to get their first and develop more of a fanbase (They saw what happened w/ the original XBOX, which in my opinion was a superior product than the products it was competing against, no one mentions that). How do you even classify the Wii in the same categoryas the PS3 and XBOX360 (You would have to be pretty ignorant to do that). Sure it has sold units at higher rates but look at the numbers who is really playing the Wii (bust out some age demographics on that one, cause I can put a safe bet that it's not comprised of the same share as the PS3 and XBOX360). Not to mention it has the shelf life of moldy bread, how many developers have already stated internally the Wii is crap (sure its got a gimmick and those tend to work on a younger audience, or the parents of crying children). Is mircosoft or sony, who also has an increasing number of units overheating ( but they try kicking off to avoid damage), from a sony sales rep, partly yes, they should have BOTH had the oversight to recognize the changes that where occurring, and that they wanted. I ask you to go online with your 360 and ps3 with lets say C0D4, since it has the feature built in and look at the staggering amount of play time that is going on, 20, 40, 60, or 80 days played on a game that has been available for not even an entire year yet? (20/330, is a hefty chunk) Especially considering that's not all gamers are doing, other games, dvd's, downloads, videos, and more, most people prolly have there system on for atleast a few hours a day, and then there are the serious gamers, who rarely shut theirs off. If you have a problem of 6 units burning up, or having the life span of about a year, maybe it's time to go for a walk. I've had two XBOX360 go to crap on me, never RROD, but they should have ditched the refurbs and went for new units in my opinion they were worse than new ones. Was or is there a problem with the 360 YES, the Wii YES, the PS3 YES! Are the companies guilty, YES! Are you and I guilty YES (How many people have 4-6 inches of clearance on all sides of there 360 or PS3?) Are we ever gonna take responsibility and acknowledge factors that we ourselves contribute to the problem, NO! Get off this crap already if you're a gamer you're going to keep gaming, and now a days it's usually on more than one console, I own them all I bet you do to. It's nice to be heard and demand change for the future. But, for christ's sake, do it with some dignitiy and examine all factors, not just the ones you don't have control over.

This story is amazing. I couldn't stop reading it. It hit home because I am on my fourth xbox 360. First was a disc drive failure, luckily AAFES replaced it for me. Second and Third was the RROD. Second RROD fell out of the three year warranty just days before I was to ship it out, leaving me to buy the fourth RROD piece of fucking shit console. I've spent the whole day on the web reading about Towel repairs and stumbelled upon this story out of hatred towards MS. Problem is, the system, when working properly, is just flat-out superior in all aspects to the other consoles. The games, too, are amazing. I had XP, then I bought the 350 buck Vista. MS products are good, when they don't fail, like the 360.

But what MS needs to do, must do, and hopefully the uprising will make them do, is to provide a lifetime warranty for RROD failures. Also they must make public the failure rate and put it on the box, so before people buy, they know the chance of it being shit!

I'm not sending my 360 in to get repairs, even though its free, I am going to just say fuck it, and buy a Nintendo Wii!!!!!

Don't keep feeding the MS machine, which will just keep spewing out more crappy products!

I feel VERY confident we see the same thing when the successor to the 360 hits the market.

Excellent article which I only chanced upon today.

Apart from the usual big-company cock-ups, it shows a revealing picture of how a certain large company approaches the truth when dealing with consumers. The author couldn't have made any of this up if he tried. What happened here is pure Dilbert.

All in all I hope that game consoles fail altogether. I do my gaming on a PC, and I would like to see PCs remain the focus point of gaming. PC's are much more versatile and open than mere game consoles.

great article. i was too, a huge microsoft xbox360 fan! primarily cause it was from the usa so i had to support it. my first exbox 360 died, not with the ring of death, but just stopped working, so i bougt another one..well exactly 14 months later, it wouldnt read the discs and wouldnt even power up to read the disc. (keep in mind, i really didnt play very much, just online madden a few times a week maybe a total of an hour a week) So i had to make a decision, yes...i bought a ps3. wow, its been just over 2 months , but i love this device and everyone i talk to that has one has never had a problem with it, (for over 2 years) hmmm..well microsoft lost another gamer who spends at least $600 bucks a year on games, not including accesories and online crap!! anyone i talk to will get an ear full from me...DONT BUY THE XBOX360! I will not support microsoft from this point on and its all about playstation... too bad!

Last Christmas I bought 3 premium xbox 360's. One for my son, nephew, and niece. About six months later, some time in the summer, all three of the xbox's no longer worked. It blew my mind; I'd spent more than 1200 dollars on things that don't work? I still have my NES in the attic and I can guarantee that baby still works.
My son's got the 3 red lights, nephew's continually froze about 5 minutes after powering on, and my niece just didn't like hers because it would freeze or skip, or the audio or video would cut out or get really loud. Basically, she didn't like it caused it scared her!
All three were still under warranty at that point, so we sent them in for repair. That's when the fun began.

The first two "refurbished" 360's were returned 6 WEEKS LATER. They worked for about a week each the kids said, but eventually both "refurbished" 360's got the flashing 3 red lights. Neither my son, nephew, or myself wanted to bother sending it back to Microsoft again. My niece's came back 8 WEEKS LATER (it took 2 DAMN MONTHS? they must be backed up - not a good sign) and it's still working, considering she only plays it about once a month now, if that.

I got a Sony PS3 as a gift when it first came out, more than several months ago, I watch DVD's on it, and the kids use it to play games every now and then. It's been almost a year now since we've had the PS3 and it works fine - although it's pricey, there's talk of them lowering the price - which they should so they can bury microsoft in the grave they're digging themselves.

I almost forgot to mention that my neighbor bought an Xbox 360 Elite, the black one that's the highest priced and supposedly highest quality with the updates that microsoft is trying to say will fix the existing defects on "older 360's" (even though the 3 premium xbox 360's that I bought were already supposed to have new hardware updates - but still ended up going shitward), the neighbor got his two weeks ago and it started out with one red light out of the box, and now has 3 red lights! He spent somewhere around $500 on it the poor guy.

Well, in a way I'm glad those xbox's don't work. First off, now the kids have lost faith in the corporate system which was always an overpriced consequence to begin with. Second they're outside playing, making friends, and keeping fit (off the couch anyway). Lastly, they've learned to use the "F" word in a rather satisfying way. FUCK greed and FUCK microsoft.
PARENTS - TRUST THE MILLIONS WHO'VE ALREADY BEEN SCREWED, DON'T BUY AN XBOX THIS CHRISTMAS.

ps - I truly hope those lawsuits go through, there should have been a recall a long long time ago, concerning the overheating, and the 360's many other defects; because it's criminal.

Thank you anonymous. You helped me not to buy at this time.
This article is more relevant today than ever before. The article shows, MS has a very serious, long standing, problem with it's XBox 360, and "that problem" still remains today. (12/9/08)Despite hardware updates to fix the problem.

Note to MS: "It's a known fact": From the grade school kid, who asks Mom & Dad for a game system, to the adult gamer, "the XBox 360 system has the best concept, and interactive thinking, and that makes it the most desired system around the world. Unfortunatly it is also a known fact: That there have been serious problems with the 360 for a couple of years now.
People figured the problems would be acknowledged, but found MS more willing to play 360 roulette than deal with the issues.
I was going to get my kids a XBox 360 for Christmas this year. Thankfully my family will now be spared the financial quicksand of upgrading from the "old XBox" to the more expensive XBox 360. This article, and comments like the one made by anonymous let me know, even though I was eager to hear all was well with the 360, the truth was the upgrades were a hoax. There's always next year I guess, unless the kid's decide to just go with the PS3 that is.

I purchased a 360 in Jan 07. It died within two weeks. The turnaround time to have it repaired was nearly four weeks. At around 16:00 on Xmas eve 07 it displays the RROD. Guess what my son received as a birthday present a few days ago and will receive in a few hours after I write this?

The holidays, two new games and nothing to play them on for four weeks. Merry Christmas Microsoft. There are some things a warranty can't fix. Want to bet they will repair it with the same rubbish components they did a few months ago and that this will happen again in a few more?

We gave a new Xbox 360 to my grandson for Christmas '06. He received several new games for Christmas '07 and the 360 quit working with a RROD on Christmas day. This year the same thing happened on Christmas day. Two years in a row, just like clock work.

I'm beginning to think the "360" in the name describes the turn around to get it repaired on a regular basis... I'm thinking seriously about getting him a PS3 this go around.

Although I can certainly understand how angry early adopter customers must feel towards Microsoft, I think it's a little unfair to beat them up knowing that they needed to deliver their 360 console in order to maintain a competitive edge with Nintendo and that "other" gaming platform. Truth is, people buy game platforms for the games; not the platforms and Microsoft was able to deliver excellent titles that brought many people much satisfaction. There will always be inherent risks in becoming an early adopter, and this risk should be recognized and understood by the consumer before placing all blame entirely on the manufacturer.

I have been sitting back and trying to decide on which console I really want to get. The 360 seems to be the most popular and functional. However I am cautious about sinking my money into a console that has known hardware issues and the company is too beligerant to do anything about them. Yet when people take the time to do simple things to keep their Xbox working, for instance upgrading the CPU and GPU heatsink fans, the "customer" is then banned from their online service for having a "modded" box.

Microsoft is thickheaded. From what I have seen, they are more interested in the cashflow they can have now vs. the customers satisfaction.

However, the problem is that the titles that everyone would like to play comes out for the Xbox first, in most cases. So if I wanted to get a PS3, the odds of the new title coming out for it first is slim.

I am a Rockband freak. Love the game. I had a Wii in my house for a bit and decided to get the game. Once I had it, I found that the downloadable content was missing in the Wii format. Visually, it was amazing but after playing the standard songs over and over again, well it was quite boring after awhile. Yet with the Xbox, downloadable content was there, and the same with the PS3 version.

My point is that I am stuck on functionality. Which console will give me the functionality I need and the reliability I deserve from purchasing the unit.

I recently, in October of 2008, bought my first 360. I've taken a few years off from playing video games. After seeing all of the commercials for games, and listening to my friend talk about how much fun the system is, I decided to "break down" (pun intended) and buy one.

Now, it's February of 2009 and I receive DDE messages. No, it's not the rings of death, but the system is inoperable. They fixed the rings of death (maybe?), but obviously this system is destined to break down.

However, I did not hear of this problem when I bought it. If I would have known about all of the problems with the 360, I would've bought a WII or PS3. The games for the 360 attracted me. What's the point of have a large arsenal of games while your 360 is sitting a repair plant?

The Questions I Have for Microsoft AND Gamestop:

    1) Why wasn't I made aware of the high error rate? Obviously, if a product has a high failure rate, the consumer should be aware. It's not only on Microsoft's head to make the consumer aware, but what about the retail seller? Microsoft is not the only demon in this equation. How do the retail seller's come of unscathed? They are selling the products without disclosing a major ISSUE that the product has? What about Best Buy? Selling $50 replacement programs? They are racking up on the sell of the machine, and then on the sale of the warranty.

    2) How come they cannot figure this out? It's been a very, very long time since the system was released. It's nearing the time that new systems are probably starting to be pondered, and yet Microsoft STILL can't even get their current disaster under control.

    3) Microsoft, you make plenty of profits, why not just give the consumers refunds? I would prefer to never do business with you again. However, I'm stuck doing business with you. A refund won't be given by Gamestop, and all you offer to do is send me a "Refurbished" ticking-time bomb. Thanks for that. Thanks for the 3-year warranty extension I've been reading about. Thanks for the revolving door of refurbished machines. Instead of spending billions on repairing the problem, why not just refund the money to the customer's who want it? It's like an arranged marriage. Just like a mail-order bride, I'm stuck with what I got (that's you, Microsoft).

you have to be crazy to buy a ms product. or any "next gen" console 4 the matter.
i like to have absolute control over my hardware, choose the best parts, best cooling, motherboard, gpu, cpu, ram, hdd, software. none of this is possible with a console toy.
if my pc has a problem (almost impossible) i know how to fix it. on the other hand console
kids have to call ms and beg. its a matter of self respect really.

since any self respecting gamer not only uses consoles but also pc, you are not as awesome as you think. You sound like you think you are the only one who has ever built a PC. I started building my own when I was 15, and also enjoy playing on consoles as well.

and by the way, it is certainly possible to to mod an xbox. I have replaced the heatsinks, fan and dvd-rom firmware in mine. You just have to have the balls to kill the warranty.

Your explanation of technical details (like about the switch from 90nm to 65nm) is rather lacking. One of the major reasons behind switching to a smaller manufacturing process is reduced power consumption. and thus less heat output.

"Instead, the company was ramping up to offer a new accessory, an HD-DVD drive that could play next-generation DVD movies for the low price of $199. That was meant to parry Sony’s PlayStation 3, which had a Blu-ray next-generation DVD drive built into the system."

HD-DVD's are not "next generation DVD movies," they are HD-DVD's. That'd be like calling a DVD a next generation VHS. And a Blu-ray disc isn't a "next generation DVD" either. It isn't a DVD at all, it's a Blu-ray.

The article reads like it was written for someone who had never heard of a 360 before. And be honest, who in the hell is going to read a 6 page article about technical problems with a console they never heard of.
  • fred · 1 year ago
Yes, HD-DVD are "the next generation DVDs". HD DVD are designed with the same technology as DVDs, but with greater capacity, and the players are completely backward compatble with DVDs. It's even possible to make a disk that is both a DVD and a HD DVD and play in both kinds of player. What a way to dismiss the whole article.
  • Michael · 1 year ago
No, HD-DVD use blue lasers, just like Blu-ray does.
  • lol at YOU · 1 year ago
No, the drives use blue lasers - the discs are indeed very similar to each other. They even used the same anti-piracy methods. Unlike Blu-Ray which has a stronger encryption and different read/write method as the DVD and HD-DVD did.

Wow, was there not even a single mention of the lead free solder that the green movement has been pushing? Yes their were design flaws related to the X Clamp that holds the GPU to the motherboard, but it was only because of the inferior lead free solder that it became so common for it to become disconnected.

That's why things like the towel trick worked. Heating up the 360 allowed the solder to reset somewhat, curing a RROD at least for a while.
One of the XBox mod groups Team-Executor sold RROD repair kits, that were basicly small squares of rubber that prevented the X Clamp from warping, keeping the GPU attached from the motherboard.

Ok, I understand your fustration, but honestly what i see you doing here is trying to turn the xbox fans away from the console......You may jest about the RROD and the many flaws that the 360 has, but it has been forgiven by most xbox gamers....really people don't wanna hear about this RROD bullshit.....You say this like somebody's gonna give you and Emmy award....But the true fact is when a gamer has friends to play with on Xbox live or a new game comes out that everyone knows will be great on Live, they want to play it....The gamer who has a broken Xbox will remember the fun he/she had on live especially the friends they played with and will eventually go back to the console....so really, bringing this story up now is what people have been already suspecting or thinking about, but dont really care.....The games are still therre to be played even though the 360 has defects.....And the games that people wanna play doesnt show up on the PS3 nor the WII, so if it's on the 360....people will buy the 360......Please think about what you write first before you write it...Because there's always a truth to every article and comment.....The 360 is still selling regardless of its flaws.....and great games are still being made...You contradicted yourself and it fired back in your face homie......

Sorry to break it to you young lady but Xbox sales have nosedived in other countries due to the repeated nature of the RRODs. We might have appreciated the games on the 360 but are not willing to go through the wringer & have our gaming consoles unavailable rfor a month every year.

  • ScatterBrain · 1 year ago
I think it's important that we hear about the "RROD bullshit". If these problems aren't analyzed and presented to customers then Xbox 720(?) will suffer the exact same problems and frustration.

However, we might be too late:
"...said at a dinner in July that Microsoft’s own research shows that gamers have largely forgiven the company for defective Xbox 360s..."
    EQUALS
"We've successfully regained the faith of our customers, let's ship the next terd."
  • CT · 1 year ago
But they are losing sales. I think the 360 looks like a great console but I'm not prepared to pay for something that may or may not work reliably. I work hard for my money and I'm not prepared to have to send it away for repairs on a regular basis no matter how much fun it may be.
I wouldn't buy a washing machine, cooker or tv with a reputation for being unreliable so why should I accept that from a game console?

The gamer who has a broken XBox will remember the fun they were having on Live and then be angry at Microsoft for producing a shoddy product so that their playing time was called to an abrupt halt.
Have you never seen the angry posts on a game's forum when the server goes down? I imagine that the reaction would be much the same for a console.

The whole point of articles like this is to point out that actually people are unhappy about this. If you're enjoying your gaming experience, great. Have fun with that but there's nothing wrong with people voicing their concerns about a product.
I for one don't want the console to fail just for the reliability to improve so I can feel confident in my purchase.
  • j · 1 year ago
with the waning number of exclusives (especially demonstrated by the list of games for this coming fall/winter), how long will Live's popularity last, especially if it runs at a cost of $50/yr minimum?

My friend has had 4 xbox failures. He's been playing more and more on his ps3 b/c it's dependable, and it gets the job done reliably...for FREE.

Trini, I have to agree with idrinktea, I own a 360 and I have to say I love it a ton. However, the whole spiel, regardless of how americans feel, Microsoft's entirely out of line. I have lost 3 Xboxes to the RROD. I just ended up buying a ps3 I really didnt want to because I thought it was way to overpriced and pretentious, but I was tired of the box being out of comission all the time. The one I have now works but I was and still am....Disapointed

  • lyme · 1 year ago
Interesting if somewhat contorted re-telling of events. While the story read well, it was quite biased, and confuses many things simply to get more emotion out of people. True, the RROD issue, and others has been the worst console failure since the massive dvd failure issue on the PS2. It is also true that some of the updates did brick some systems, just as PS3 and Wii updates did. What is very misleading is the retelling of yields, and the inference that MS sold the ones that failed testing. Sure MS has had yield issues, but it did not sell those ones to customers, it was the ones that passed the tests that were sold. As such the yield issue, while quite interesting, had little to do with the failures.

You have also failed to mention that MS has brought the failure rate of newly produced consoles back to the industry acceptable range, but that would ruin the punchline to the story.
  • Kid · 1 year ago
"You have also failed to mention that MS has brought the failure rate of newly produced consoles back to the industry acceptable range, but that would ruin the punchline to the story."
-Not yet..... True, they've greatly reduced it. But they are still way off from the acceptable failure rate of 3%, even for the recently produced Xbox 360's. Reports back in Feb have the failure rate around 10% to 16% (depending on which source you rely on), compared to June '07 reports that run anywhere from around 30% to 70%. Also note that some of these website only take note of RROD failures. If you add on other system issues, that percentage could go higher...
  • idrinktea · 1 year ago
Yes, but you see, Microsoft IS the industry, so If Microsoft says 10-16% is acceptable, then then a 10-16% failure rate is normal & unless you're part of the "Sony Defense Force" you'd accept that, right?

I own an original Xbox & have been waiting to buy a new console until either the price of the PS3 comes down or MS solves the RROD. Like the article said, MS may be content to have launched a buggy console, but in the eyes of many people they have squandered an enormous amount of trust.
  • Are you on drugs, too? · 1 year ago
I hate to break it to you mate but... 10 to 16% is completely unacceptable. Microsoft does NOT set the standard as to what is acceptable. And it's a good thing too because if you read the article and have any prior knowledge regarding the RRoD issue, they were stating that they were within "reasonable return rates" when 30% or more of the systems were failing. If the manufacturers set the standard as to what is acceptable, we'd have a market flooded with crap. There would be no reason for them to extend their warranties or to issue replacements to people who have issues.

"I apologize your console failed but... we believe you got out of it what we expected you to so just go buy another one... Thanks"
  • idrinktea · 1 year ago
    Sigh, ever heard of sarcasm?

My original xbox is just fine & still plays all the games I bought for it. I'm still angry at MS for orphaning it by cutting off all development for it when they prematurely brought out the 360, but at least my console still works...
  • Not The Industry · 1 year ago

Ummm Microsoft ISN"T the industry... hell Microsoft aren't even a proper electronics company (Which is evident in this article). 3% is an electronics industry standard so that appeals not only to Sony and Nintendo but to Samsung, Siemens, Panasonic and Canon to name just a few. Just because Microsoft says its acceptable doesn't mean it is.

The fact that Microsoft expects people just to accept what they say is right, just proves that they really are out of touch with consumers. You could argue the guarantee losses they took was listening to the consumer but in reality they were only trying to save face in the media as at that time they being torn to shreds. But yet they still send out faulty referb machines as a replacement shows that they still don't listen to the consumer or are any where near being "the industry".

When I read his comment I took it with a sarcastic tone. So I am pretty sure that he was not "serious" with his comment. I bet "idrinktea" is laughing at your response as he was on your side to begin with... afterall he stated "have been waiting to buy a new console until either the price of the PS3 comes down or MS solves the RROD"

I have had a 360 for 2 1/2 years and have been lucky to have not had to send my system back. I am waiting for my 3 years to be up and am expecting it to fail. No, it is not acceptable, and am hoping that they learned their lesson before their next generation. If this is not the case, MS will have essentially eliminated any success of future consoles.

You are right. The IT people always have and always will worship Microsoft and keep them in control. Everyone had better get used to it. Microsoft will decide what is acceptable, not gammers.

This is a extemely wonderful article. I appreciate the effort and thought involved. How insightful. In fact, I think I will purchase your book when it hits the stands. And just to add to the fanboy war, here is my opinion of the PS3: HDMI (standard) - Blue-Ray (standard) - the crazy powerful Cell Processor (standard) - Online Gaming subscription fee (free - $0) - and the hard drive is upgradable with 2.5 inch SATA drives with no tools (unless you are considering fingers tools - not even a screwdriver is needed). If console marriage (and polygamy) was legal, I would marry my PS3.
  • joe · 1 year ago

  • Justin · 1 year ago
yes i second that you need a screwdriver. In fact you actually need 2 screwdrivers. One flat head screwdriver to pop of the black hard drive cover. Second a Phillips to release the hard drive sliding mechanism. Also if you want to use another hard drive you have to unscrew the cradle that is attached to the original hard drive and screw it into the new hard drive. Unless you god and you can unscrew Phillips screws with your fingers.

This just seems like Dean's effort to sell a few more books by rehashing things that have been in the blogs for months.

I've got to doubt that Dean will ever get the same access at Microsoft as he enjoyed for Xbox and Xbox360. Sure, maybe he'll get inaccurate information from wanabe "insiders," but he's not going to be writing a book on the next console with any more access than the rest of us.

I ended up buying a ps3 because I already had a pc capable of playing games like crysis, cod, and I wanted a hd disc format player for my 1080 tv, and the ps3 with it's included blue ray player would be cheaper than a 360 plus hd drive. Besides that, i'd have a wider selection of games, since I still would game on my pc, and buy exclusives for the ps3. Not flaming, but I love the ps3, it's great at showing digital photos and home movies, casual web surfing (for free) and blue ray discs are great. I don't like it's standard dvd play, it does upscale well, but seems to crop too much, and it doesn't deinterlace vob files when playing from it's hard drive ( which I upgraded to 250 gigs). Still, as a media hub it's great. I only have a few games that are exclusive to ps3, and they have been great (uncharted, mgs4, stardust hd). what I don't understand is, why buy a 360? Playing with a controller is no where as accurate as with a keyboard/mouse, internet access costs $, hdvideo is dead, plus the subject of this article, the failure rate would turn me off. Can't you buy these same games for pc? (i'm asking, I really don't know) Aren't new pc's more powerfull already? I'm not a sony fanboy either, I never had a ps2, it just didn't compare to the pc gaming experience, and my next game machine will probably be a home brew pc hooked up through hdmi to my tv. But i'll still have the ps3 to boot up in just a few seconds to show pictures, play music, surf or play bluerays. And play games...
  • Jagosix · 1 year ago
Hello Fellow Gamers. BTW good article. Wow ray good for you. But answer me this. You stated that your pc already covered what the X360 has in games. Why would you use a PS3 to surf the internet with? The PC smokes any console when it comes to web surfing. Please explain that to me.
As of 09-07-2008 the X360 still has a larger library of games than the PS3. XBLA and the DISC selection library puts the PS3 to shame. The x360 is great at showing photos and home movies. Why buy a PS3? Playing with a controller is no where as accurate as with a keyboard/mouse, internet access costs $, Blu-Ray is dying, plus the subject of this article is an informal read.
Dude you sound like certifiable SONY fanboy. I just mostly took your words and replaced them with X360 words with a little mix of my own. So here's a little more to add.
The X360 is still the only console where you can have custom music for ANY GAME (past present & future). It can be streamed through, network, via USB (ipod, iphone etc..). It has had vibrational controllers since day 1 (sony recenlty obtained theirs..Lawsuit). Still has the BEST console online service. I'm not going to go into details about the other features, but you get the picture.
People will buy what they want to buy. You bought a PS3. Good for you. Others bought a X360. Good for them. The reasons for you not buying a X360 is your opinion. The reasons I purchased a X360 is my opinion. We all have that right. Don't make this sound like the PS3 doesn't have problems. I've repaired plenty of those things too. No console is 100% defective free. They all will break sooner or later.
But hey, I'll still have the X360 to boot up in just few seconds to play my music, play blu-ray (yeah it can play Blu-ray movies (via network, usb ext. HDD,..etc), more importantly, play games. That's the reason to own a console.
Enough of that . For all of you that don't know. As of 09-05-2008 the X360 price starts at $199USD. That's right. It's cheaper than the Wii. So go out an get one (for those of you waiting for a price drop).

  • KevinC · 1 year ago
Er, eh. Your comment is kinda stupid. I'm sorry, I generally don't openly insult people but I'm gonna have to stick with...kinda stupid:
"The x360 is great at showing photos and home movies. Why buy a PS3?" - The ps3 does this very nicely was well
"Playing with a controller is no where as accurate as with a keyboard/mouse" - Are you saying that you can keyboard/mouse on an xbox and not a ps3 (not true) or are you saying we should use a pc for that sort of thing. This sentence was pretty badly written.
"internet access costs $" - astute but irrelavent
"Blu-Ray is dying" - Tell me, is High Definition dying as well?
"I just mostly took your words and replaced them with X360 words with a little mix of my own." - Sadly, your "mix" is just stupid.
"It can be streamed through, network, via USB (ipod, iphone etc..)" - Certainly not that extra wireless USB adapter you have sitting around, you have to use MS's proprietary adapter or an equally expensive one. Also, I thought you need iTunes to hook up an iPod (I could be wrong on this one), but I'm pretty sure MS is installing iTunes on xboxs now.
"It has had vibrational controllers since day 1" - I really wouldn't bring up 'Day 1' for the xbox 360 as a comment following an article talking about early production issues.
"I'll still have the X360 to boot up in just few seconds to play my music, play blu-ray (yeah it can play Blu-ray movies (via network, usb ext. HDD,..etc)" - This is, by far, your dumbest comment. Somewhere along the line it is ultimately playing a blue ray movie via a BLUE RAY player which the xbox does not have. That's like saying my Fiat will do 200mph via gravity and a really high cliff.
And finally, "As of 09-05-2008 the X360 price starts at $199USD. That's right. It's cheaper than the Wii." - WHY IS EVERYONE FALLING FOR THIS?? This $199 price is horse sh*t. You're going to end up spending hundreds of dollars on add-ons when you get it home and realize you just bought a totally crippled system.
At any rate, sorry Jagosix but, you're dumb. :)

Gotta say that I have had an xbox since the beginning. I cant BELIEVE you guys are willing to keep cycling through a product that cost 500 bucks or more, taking weeks to get another one. I just get red rings, and am in the process of returning to Texas to get another one. I WILL NOT do this twice. All that about how it is the best game console is BS- yeah, a corvette looks better than a taurus, but if the engine doesnt work, it isnt better. I am so pissed that Microsoft, in the rush to beat the competition, shipped millions of these pieces of crap out the door- KNOWING that they will break down. What a waste. I will be getting a PS3 when my xbox number 2 goes. to shit.
  • SoTiredOfU · 1 year ago
Never had a problem with either of my 360's and they get plenty of play. Good article but am so sick of hearing about RROD. It's obvious MS even if they have a machine that never breaks will never be able to live down the problems. Heck, even the PS2 was eventually forgiven for it's epidemic of DRE issues with the PS2.

One word of advice to all of you. Sell your 360 get and get a PS3 and when you get the YLOD on it or your Blu-ray drive fails which seems to be happening more and more(happened to me on the 60gig model) you can pay them $120 dollars and get it fixed knowing you stuck it to MS! (then make cry baby blogs and stories about it).
  • and yet · 1 year ago
It pains me that folks still volunteer their opinions even as they have no idea what a good comment might sound like. Let me translate your comment to show what you are really saying:

"I never had a problem so therefore no one else ought to be having problems. Until I have the problem personally, the problem must not exist. So until I have the problem, it is my responsibility to accuse others of lying as often as I can, because I'm a hero. And I don't care about the mountain of evidence that clearly proves me wrong."

    Yeah, real smart. Even better:

"If you don't love something, your only logical choice is to leave it. Under no circumstances will you spend time or resources trying to improve or progress the situation. Your only option is to leave and never look back...seriously, any criticism should result in banning yourself to the point where you jump to the other side and godammit you better love the other side without question. Whatever you do, you get what you deserve and there's nothing you should be able to do to change anything."

You hear that?? It's the sound of someone beating a dead horse.

I also have 2 xbox360s and they too are running just fine. This article is stale and the writer is looking to get some hits by stirring the pot. MS called it him out on it and they are right.

OLD NEWS...OLD HORSE. Let it go.
  • EC · 1 year ago
The only dead horse being beaten here is the one MS keeps selling as a live horse. Read around. Inform yourself. The failure rate by now is around 30%. That's right almost one out of every three freaking 360s sold has failed. Consider yourself lucky that your two happened to be the 2 out of 3 that didn't. Even a 10% failure rate in 3 years is unacceptable.

All sarcasm aside, in the classical sense of the term, people like you are the only ones beating a dead horse here. Even MICROSOFT has quit beating that horse.
