VentureBeat: ZillionTV takes a new approach to the set-top box

  • Bill · 8 months ago
Just give us a cheap box with no commercials, then slowly raise the rates and add commercials. Cable T.V. did it and it worked great for them. After about 10 years we'll all be complaining but it will be to late, we will be hooked.

Meh. Seems like another box to watch television. I already have cable, and I have a VUDU Box for movies. I don't need much else.

Can we watch content on BitTorrent or RapidShare on such box ?

Can one watch any "unpaid" or "pirated content" one can find on Internet on such box ?

Studios will license to everybody and their mom or anybody with cash. Zillion tv will need to do better than that. With no proprietary technology or exclusive content, the business model look like DOA to me.

zillion is just bringing a pea shooter into the fight with netflix and apple tv both with billions in cash. Good luck!

another set top box with really no differentiating factor. Satellite TV, Netflix, Cable, Youtube, Radio etc - now we have to buy a box for $100 to view programs with ads. How Nice! They did internal tests and free boxes did not do well - what a piece of bullshit! Their board must have told them, NO free boxes. That really means $100 CPA! Idiots!

Half-baked beta software, hardware boxes with single or two-source distribution deals, no mass consumer penetration by anyone, and you're calling the STB wars over? The fighting hasn't even begun yet and when the smoke clears, the companies listed above will have long since raised the white flag to either an old school powerhouse, Scientific Atlanta, or a company that is still just a gleam in some Google millionaire's eye.
